Eminem nabs the top spot as best-selling artist of 2000s

The dust has settled, and the epic confrontation between The Beatles and Eminem as to who exactly is the king of the decade’s record sales has been decided. The man born Marshall Mathers has edged out Liverpool’s most famous sons to take home the proverbial throne.

According to USA Today, Nielsen Soundscan charted the data until November 1st. While the boys still have until December 31st to move more units, experts say nothing can be done to alter the rankings. Eminem sold an astonishing 32.2 million records, despite a near three-year hiatus until the release of Relapse earlier this year. The Beatles came in a close second with 30 million records. And while Em gets what is undoubtedly awesome bragging rights, John, Paul, George and, even Ringo get the honor of having the best-selling album of the decade; their compilation 1 sold 11.5 million copies, just beating out N’Sync’s No Strings Attached by 400,000 copies. But data crunchers like Nielsen are winners too, as they’ve charted the race to the top of the mountain from the beginning.

“When you get toward 11 million units, it has to be more than early momentum,” said Eric Weinberg, president of Nielsen Entertainment. “It needs to be good. What’s amazing about this industry is that we really never know what the numbers are going to be.”

Of course, Em does have two albums in the top 10: 2000′s The Marshall Mathers LP sold 10.2 million to come in at No. 4 and 2002′s The Eminem Show grabbed No. 5 with 9.8 million. Other artists on the list include Nelly at No. 10 by moving 8.5 million of his 2000 album Country Grammar and Norah Jones selling 10.5 million copies of Come Away With Me to slide into No. 3.

It’s been a good decade to be Eminem. Now let’s just get out Relapse: Refill out ASAP and we can really celebrate.
