Update: Rivers Cuomo injured in bus accident

Update: The band has posted a lengthy account of the incident (w/ photos). Cuomo sustained three cracked ribs and “very painful internal damage.” He has been transported to a larger area hospital where he remains under observation. The injured assistant, Sarah, also sustained cracked ribs but has since been released from the hospital. Not surprisingly, they have also announced that all remaining December tour dates have been canceled.

Rivers Cuomo, the lead singer of Weezer, was reportedly injured in a bus accident early Sunday morning (Dec. 6th). According to CNN, the 40-year-old musician complained of rib pain and was transferred, along with a band assistant, to St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam, New York. Cuomo’s wife, daughter, and a fifth passenger on the bus were uninjured. The bus was traveling from Toronto, Ontario, to Boston, Massachusetts, for a show Monday night at the Agganis Arena at Boston University.

The accident occurred shortly after 7:30 a.m. on the New York State Thruway after the bus slid on ice. According to police reports, the bus went into the median and hit some reflective posts before crossing back over the highway, going over the guardrail and landing in a ditch.

We’ll update you as more information becomes available. And we of course wish Rivers and Co. a very speedy recovery.
