Muse and Foo Fighters sold me, maybe two of the best bands to come out of the last fifteen years….then Two door cinema club, mancehster orchestra, cudi, deadmau5, skrillex, arctic monkeys…..this year will be insane and I can’t wait to be there for the action
Schedule released. Pretty conflict free if you ask me. Does anybody want to trade Pretty light tickets for bassnectar tickets? I have 6 and would like to go see bassnectar instead since there are no conflicts. I thought for sure pretty lights and the flaming lips would be at the same time.

@ Dan – Never seen dmb, not a fan. Trust me when I tell u I am far from a ‘bro’. Never been to a frat house in my life. The band I’m actually most excited to see this year are the local natives, but a lineup tht includes at least 15-20 good bands worth seeing is just stupid, especially when you never get to see all of them anyways. And then there are times where all of a sudden no one on any of the stages interests you, so u venture to other stages in hope of finding something to keep your interest for 15-20mins. If they don’t, walk away, if they do, great, you just found another band to add to your cd collection. Its what festivals are all about. So like I said, if you don’t like it , don’t go. and don’t tell me who perry should’ve added to the lineup. Find out what festivals those bands are playing and go to thier message boards.
Dan
I just want to say that the Dan that posted a couple after mine is a different Dan, although I agree with most of what he said. I don’t understand this comment. You said earlier “I’m sure there’s some noname bands that u music snobs could find to headline” and now you are saying fests are all about finding new, lesser known music. Which one is it? I agree with this comment you made, but you sounded completely different in the other. Until the headliners are Lady Gaga, Bieber, Kesha, Kings of Leon, 30 Seconds to Mars, and Nickleback, I’ll continue to go to Lolla. I go every year, and it’s probably my favorite weekend of the year…..I also never said anything about Perry’s.

Awesome news! I love me some Bowie. As an artist for shows (I make show posters), I love it when music crosses over into the museum. I hope I can get out there, but I’m currently swamped with work due to all the festivals and summer touring.

@RaoulDuke … you win hands down for worst unexpected/uninvited guest … hope that at some point Bonnaroo karma paid you back in a good way for having to deal with that … sidenote, I caught Arcade Fire in Chicago last Sunday … I’m a fan and was very pleased with their show (2nd night of a three night run) … high energy, just the more well-known stuff … was a little short (think it was about a 90 minute set) … fans of theirs at Bonnaroo will certainly get what they came for (just don’t expect a long set a la Radiohead or Pearl Jam), and those that don’t know them well will definitely enjoy hearing a band that can keep a big crowd engaged …

Maybe they forgot, or this was way before their time, but it’s surely not the “first-ever touring electronic ONLY music festival,”. We had the Big Top Tour back in 1997. You could argue that if you took that lineup from 1997, and had it in 2011 it is better then the lineup for this festival tour. With that said, if this hits my area, I’d most likely go as well.
HandBanana
I don’t care if it’s a punk, metal, country or an electronic festival… Someone needs to just put a leash on these things. It’s cool to have more options, but it’s like a new one sprouts up each day whether it be touring or multi-day. Today’s IDENTITY Festival is tomorrow’s H.O.R.D.E. Tour.

I agree with most people, this lineup doesn’t compare to the last two years which were fantastic. Most of the bigger bands playing are not that great, but you guys need to check out some of the smaller bands. Some of the smaller bands this year are fantastic. I advise many of you to check out Portugal The Man, Maps & Atlases, Wye Oak (The drummer uses one arm to drum, and the other to play a keyboard!), Mayor Hawthorne & The County, and Titus Andronicus (who are known to have an amazing live show). Check out the smaller bands before you guys start bitching, even though I agree some of the headliners do suck.

I saw them all on that 95 tour. It was before Foos released their debut LP. Mike Watt had a song out called “The Kids of Today Should Protect Themselves From the Seventies”, which had Eddie Vedder on lead vocals. It was a very loud affair in a small venue. It was a great show.

Oh, well. I was there to hear Grohl.

?? Flogging Molly isn’t on the official bluesfest list…

What a terribly indulgent review. You talk like you know so much about Radiohead fans. I won’t be etching anything, because King of Limbs is a great album.

This is a great blog post. I love traveling to other countries.
Travelers are quite often not sure of the specific requirements or documentation required to enter into a foreign country. Our site helps international travelers easily understand what is specifically required of them in order to gain passage into another country.
I dunno about Flogging Molly… would be a kickass time, but the Bluesfest website has no mention of them.

had a chance to see these guys last year at a bowling alley in new orleans. a gem. then i saw them gain recognition at ACL fest. they’re really nice guys. looking forward to the new album and their rise to the rightful respect they deserve.
I disagree with everything in this review. But hey that’s what music is all about. This is not the best BFS album but they are still a brilliant band managing to mix humour with great song writing and energy. And the band’s sound has changed a lot since the first couple of albums.

lol Wine and Chocolates was produced by Sitek. I’m not sure if I should be impressed at the intuition or disappointed that you didn’t find that out…

North Coast was WEAK. I regret wasting my money

I thought the song at the beginning of the show did set the tone for the rest of the show. I am also a big fan of his album Mr. Show and of his standup comedy in general. I have been a little out of the loop when it comes to comedy but thanks to a friend I work with at Dish Network that recommended the special to me I got the chance to watch it. The Epix channel is pretty good about showing HD movies and some comedy specials from time to time but I really enjoyed this one. It was usual David Cross with a little less anger than a few of his other albums. I would recommend this comedy special to my friends or anyone who likes David’s style of comedy.

Very cool. Although I’m much more a Beatles fan, Paul did some great work with Wings, in particular My Love, Maybe I’m Amazed, and of course Jet. Those would be my picks. And it’s really cool to see his stuff re-released. I’m very interested in seeing the stuff on the DVDs actually, more so than the CDs.

Coldplay proves once again that the Greeks were right when they said that musicians were the voices of the gods. In this case, like many before them, they are the voice of God!

Kudos on this review! When I first heard the buzz around this band I did what any impressionable/open minded music lover would do and purchased the album. I heard vocal talent but that was about it. The band is treading on ground that has not only been tread before but practically paved, which, in and of itself isn’t always a bad thing. There more than a few great bar bands who make a living at playing your favorite cover and help you have the night of your life, but for The Head and the Heart to be heralded as some sort of break through band is absurd. Again, your review is spot on!

North Coast Music Festival will crush all. It’s an independently run festival that other festivals seem to be copying with booking more and more electronic. NCMF was more fun than any other fest in Chicago last year and it was just their first year…it can only get better.

I saw mynameisjohnmichael a couple years ago. it was an acoustic performance and very nice. I had never heard of mnijm before and was thouroughly surprised! can’t wait to hear the new stuff.

Lollapalooza please?
Laggy
This line-up feels like it was custom tailored for me… APC and Deftones are 2 of my favorite bands. Then the Kills, DFA 1979, Muse, Ratatat, Crystal Castles, My Morning Jacket… and then Modeselektor, Bloody Beetroots, Pretty Lights, and Glitch Mob on Perry’s stage?
Too damn good for me to pass up.
Plus this could be my only chance ever to catch bands like APC, DFA, and the Kills..
I’m selling my Bonnaroo ticket and going to Lolla.
word up
thats what I’m talking about laggy. This lineup is sweet! I can’t wait for august
Dan
I think you are all idiots. This is the best lineup they have had in the past 3 years. The thing that all music fans can say is that the headliners at these type of fest’s are for your 16 year old sister. If you are going to Lolla you are not going for the headliners. You go for the 100 other bands on the side stage. You go for the Joy Formidable’s of the fest. You go for the Young the Giant, Naked and Famous the Sleigh Bells and Mountain Goats. If you want the Decemberists then you should have gone 2 years ago when they rocked the side stage. If you want Radiohead build a time machine and go back to when they released Paranoid Android. This is a fest more for the up and coming bands then it is for the top 40 music you hear on the radio. This year has better 2nd tier bands then in the past, Flogging Molly, Lykke Li, Ween, Manchester O all bands that have played here before they were as popular as they are now. If you want to bitch about not seeing the bands you want then take note this year and in two years refer to said notes and realize you saw them already. PS I saw a man die at Manchester O when they opened the whole fest 2 years ago. 10:30 on a friday morning.

i thin they are only playing the Soft Bulletin album same as Osheaga festival.

Yeah, you need to calm down. There’s no Coachella bashing in place here. Take a look at the evidence. This year’s incarnation alone: Arcade Fire, The Strokes, Kings of Leon. It’s just a part of the clustered market. Jeez.
Optional: Link to your website
True. Not that these lineups suck, but tere really needs to be less festivals to bring back that special something that differentiates them all. I’d like to see a few of them die off, like the new ones that keep popping up in every corner of the USA. Time will tell. The economy is getting better so people are spending money. It remains to be seen if the interest in festivals with mostly indie/alternative bands are just a trend. Half the kids I know that go just go because it’s a giant party to them anyway.
http://consequenceofsound.net Alex Young
At least how I see it: If you put together enough of a main stream friendly lineup (in other words, you book Kings of Leon, Foo Fighters, Eminem, Coldplay, etc.), you’re automatically going to sell out. People want to get the biggest bang out of their buck and the vast majority of the country like these “bigger” bands. So as long as they sell out, these are the type of lineups you’ll be getting. It’s all business.
http://consequenceofsound.net Alex Young
It wasn’t a jab, rather a realistic prediction. They’ll have a new album out by next Coachella. Why couldn’t they be next year’s Kings of Leon?
Musical Sensibility
mnijm is garbage. They were almost gone with that offbeat cover, but somehow found a way to slime themselves back into the scene with father’s check’s. The pretentious “indie-rock” sensation is equal in talent to the bieber-fever trend and smooth jazzers. I was hoping on this song I wouldn’t hear the same used up material from 90′s heart throb kids, but history is doomed to repeat itself once again. Look deeper in the New Orleans scene and you’ll actually see some really good talent. This is far from it.
http://twitter.com/FestivalCrasher Festival Crashers
Sigh. haters gonna hate. Bieber and smooth jazz? Where do you come up with this?
terrysanders
You must have missed their show at Lollapalooza. Or Tips. Or One Eyed Jacks. Or any of the past few years of shows. You know, the ones where everyone was having a good time listening to great music.
52 songs in 52 weeks isn’t pretentious. Its musicians who take their craft, and themselves, seriously.
Nick_critic
Musical Sensibility, really? Check your facts, because it sounds like you hate these guys simply for being fortunate. Knowing them personally, these guys tour under funds either raised by themselves or from shows they’ve already played. They work their asses off within this band, and outside of it at regular jobs. They’re the only band doing the style they do, and many of this love them for it. It’s not just stupid to write what you just did on a piece promoting something that they have put their heart and soul into, but it’s also stupid to assume that anyone would want to “look deeper into New Orleans” if you and the type of pretentiousness you yourself are promoting is what we’re going to find. Bitch to your friends about it, if you have any, don’t shit on MNIJM’s press. I hope this clears some things up without me coming off as rude as you do.
Or if you’d rather do this your style, come to one of the shows, my name is Nick, I’ll be front and center of the crowd, say things like you just said above to my face and I’ll kick your Musical teeth down your Sensible fucking throat.
Kisses.
Dumptrain
I do, in fact, agree with the sentiment of ‘Musical Sensibility’ but I will try to give my reasons in a more reasonable, respectful manner. I’ve have known John Michael for several years, and yes I don’t like him as a person. He is overtly pretentious, but tries to hide it by always being annoyingly humbling.
I agree that John Michael is a very talented guitarist (note: guitarist, not songwriter/band leader) but that doesn’t mean you can write great song, or even a decent one. And surrounding yourself by some of ‘the best’ musicians in New Orleans doesn’t mean it will work. Admittedly I haven’t listened to every single one of his songs, but all the ones I have heard are barely passable as generic ‘indie rock’ songs that rely heavily on horns and predictable build ups to keep peoples attention.
It’s also funny that most of his band quit a few months ago. I think only one person stayed on board. Yeah, he must be a real great guy.
Like, I said, aside from not liking him personally, watching his live show, and listening to his music makes me hate most music and musicians. Relying on gimmicks like hitting a trashcan with a chain to distract from the fact your actual songs suck, etc. Also, watching him ‘perform’ makes me ill. Its as if he read a book entitled ‘how to act like a rockstar while performing’. Everything seems so calculated, and it is the opposite of ‘the soul’ of New Orleans music.
NJmiami
Cruzan is not in Miami.

It’s so nice to hear and see New Orleans musicians recognized for their hard work and authenticity. This song seems to embrace the modernity of the changing musical landscape while also paying homage to the indubitable sounds of old New Orleans.
Classic and upbeat, it’s a song I want to dance to!
Thanks COS.

I am in love with this impassioned plea for acceptance of this year’s lineup. Sure, haters are gonna hate but the rest of us will have FUN until its WAY too late.

I think this lineup is really amazing, as long as you already live in Chicago. If I lived in Chicago I would be excited about it.

I want to reply to Mr. Roffman below but cannot do so under his post because the reply button is not working.
Mr. Roffman, I respect your love of Chicago and apologize for being unfairly harsh on your writing the other day. Please realize that when you live on the other side of the country, sometimes these festivals just don’t look as good to an outsider whose experienced more convenient festival logistics and lineups more tailored to his or her liking.
I read this site every day so obviously you’re providing quality up to date music news I enjoy reading. I know music fans are passionate to the point of slamming others verbally in these instances, but please accept this post as my apology for being harsh on your criticism yesterday. You’re welcome to your opinion and the last thing I want to do is offend yours and how you add something to the daily music news beat. Let’s let cooler heads prevail and not let this forum drop down to the epic levels of Coachella board proportions.
PS Whatever happened to Philip Cosores? I miss his reviews in particular.
http://www.consequenceofsound.net Michael Roffman
I don’t really see how you wouldn’t peg ACL and Lolla as destination festivals. They’re in the heart of two of the country’s more popular cities, and they celebrate that year after year. So, because you can’t camp at Lollapalooza/ACL and it’s hot/expensive for hotels, it doesn’t count?
Dan
I don’t understand your comments about Kanye. He’s one of the innovator’s of hip-hop nowadays. Everyone else is regurgitating the same old crap from the 2000s while Kanye is changing the game. Most people I know who are considered rock fans before hip-hop still have mad respect for artists like Kanye and Kid Cudi. Listen deeper to the music. Sure, if you are basing that statement off hearing “Goldigger” at every party you go to, then sure you could say that. It’s one song though. He’s one of the best entertainers in the game right now, and that is why he gets so much rep from blogs like this.

Intense humidity? Chicago? lol You people from the North are hilarious. Bonnaroo is scalding hot and more humid than any Northern city could ever be.
bludevil007
Coachella still best lineup of the U.S. fesitval circuit thus far. Sorry.
Hope ACL can pull off a stunner.
Cris
I’d take Lollapalooza 2004 (When it was still traveling) over this year’s lineup any day of the week:
Day 1: Morrissey, Sonic Youth, PJ Harvey, Le Tigre, Modest Mouse, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, the Von Bondies, Broken Social Scene, the Walkmen, Wolf Eyes, Danger Mouse, the Datsuns, Sparta, DJ Peretz
Day 2: String Cheese Incident, The Pixies, Flaming Lips, Gomez, Polyphonic Spree, the Thrills, Fire Theft, the Coup, Sound Tribe Sector 9, Elbow, Wheat, Wilco, DJ Peretz
Too bad it got canceled due to poor ticket sales. I can’t believe we as music fans failed so horribly at supporting that. Something tells me that lineup would have gone over pretty well in this day in age. My how trends have changed. I still have my unused ticket and shed a tear around this time of year whenever I remember what could have been….
