Log onto nin.com right now and you’ll be greeted by a personal message from the Nine Inch Nails figurehead:
Sorry I haven’t been around much lately, I’ve been working on not working for a couple of months, which for me is hard work. 2010 has a number of things planned including new material from nine inch nails and something else that isn’t nine inch nails. I am in a state of rediscovery and reinvention that feels unfamiliar, unsure and exactly what I need.
Ah, “new material,” eh? Could it be, as TwentyFourBit points out, the much anticipated followup to Ghosts? Or perhaps that collaboration with the King of Synthpop, Gary Numan?
And what about that “something else”? Is Mr. Reznor in fact alluding to that video game he recently teamed up with NIN graphic designer Rob Sheridan to create?
Regardless of what the Nine Inch Nails frontman has planned, it does appear that it will be as part of Nine Inch Nails, which basically throws Reznor’s previous comments — you know, the “While I enjoy doing Nine Inch Nails and touring, I’ve done it enough where there are a lot of other things I’d like to get into” type of stuff — out the window. Of course, we’re not complaining!
Now with all that figured out, let’s finish up by noting a few concrete pieces of info, like the recently released, entirely fan-made, uber awesome live documentary titled Another Version of the Truth: The Gift. Featuring high definition footage of the Nine Inch Nail’s performances 2008 performances in Sacramento, Portland, and Victoria, the video was edited and produced by fans, and is available for free download in basically every format possible. More info here.
Finally, Bauhaus’ Peter Murphy recently released a cover of NIN’s “Hurt” on iTunes. So, in case you have anytime left over between your viewing of The Gift, your bidding on used equipment, and your anticipation of everything else that is to come, you might want to check that out as well.
