Bob Dylan & Joan Baez reunite for White House performance

Former lovers/musical collaborators Bob Dylan and Joan Baez will reunite next Wednesday, February 10th for a performance at the White House. As TwentyFourBit reports, some 47 years after she joined Dylan in Washington, DC for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom (the same even where “I Have a Dream” went down), Baez is now set to join him, along with Smokey Robinson, John Mellencamp, the Blind Boys of Alabama, and others at another Civil Rights Event in the Nation’s Capital, this being the White House-hosted Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement.

In addition to their joint participation in the legendary 1963 March, Dylan and Baez collaborated together numerous occasions, including at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival (hear below) and the famed Rolling Thunder Revue tour in the mid-1970s. Baez is also widely credited for bringing Dylan into national prominence — she recorded several songs and took him on tour — during a time which the two were also romantically involved. Must-See TV  to say the least!!!

The concert will be streamed live on whitehouse.gov and televised on February 11th at 8:00 p.m. ET on public broadcasting stations nationwide.

  • No-you are correct Catweasle. They were not yet married but months away and as the outtake photos for the cover of Bringing it all Back Home show, Bob and Sara were already a solid item. As to Sooner or Later- yup it could be Edie and as you say we actually don’t know. They say “Just Like a Woman” is about her but we cannot be certain of that either. Again you are right Sooner or Later is not obviously about Joan but I think it is… though once again, you are right I could be well be wrong on that deduction. You are not nitpicking at all, in fact you may well be 100 percent correct. But the main point I made is I think valid. That is that Dylan was not at all cruel to Ms Baez and that due to a new secret committed relationship with Sara, he could not prance around as king and queen with Baez anymore. Well even if he was a bit hard and I emphasise “if” he was only 24 or something.
But again I could be wrong on that too.
At least we agree that Sooner or Later is a great song. 68 years old (Baez)? Yeah you are right about that being out by a few months too. I was going by long term memories I have of Dylan rather than any recent checking of dates. So I am on that basis alone I am in the wrong and you are absolutely correct to pick me up on it.

  • “Sooner or Later One of us must Know” on Blonde on Blonde is obviously about Baez… but its his only song that is. Its one of his great songs vastly under-appreciated.
Also I am gonna say something I haven’t heard anyone else say yet and Bob hints at it in the Scorsese doc. Dylan was not being cruel or ungrateful to Ms Baez at all in the Don’t Look Back tour. Why has nobody connected the dots? Dylan was already secretly and recently married to Sara during that tour. So how could he logically parade around with his ex-girlfriend? It was perfectly reasonable for him to distance himself from Joan Baez during that tour.
Great to see two 68 year olds singing together and still wonderfully creative…..”

I agree “One Of Us Must Know” is underrated, but “obviously about Baez”? If it’s about any specific woman (which it may not be)surely it’s Edie Sedgewick – as are several other songs from that period.
Also, the “Don’t Look Back” tour took place in April/May 1965. Bob and Sara didn’t marry until November 22 of that year.
And, sorry to really nitpick, but Joan turned 69 on January 9 of this year.

  • I wonder if they will actually sing together (which would be, to me, a BIG suprise) rather than just both appearing on the same show.

  • He should dedicate “Man of Peace” to Obama.”Sometimes Satan comes as the man of peace.”

Great to see two 68 year olds singing together and still wonderfully creative as all great artists are in their elderly years (e.g. Picasso)

  • This will be amazing. These two are good together. Joan Baez was quite instrumental introducing him to the world. There will never be another Bob dylan i love him and am in awe of how worldly wise he was when yet a child himself. Bob Dylan Rocks;) I still believe he is in love with his first wife Sara.

  • Yes Mich…that sounds good. Hope they have a greath show…and
may appear miracle they deserve. I have seen the show of Dylan in Zurich on the net. I think in sping 2009… Dyland was in greath shape with an older voice but very audible. So we can see that Dyland as like remanage that voice and it sound very grave and warm. Yes he gave it all so much many time, but now there is a new sound in is troath,no fake and real. I am dreaming this morning, Joan Baez and Dyland hope they have a break together and must be quite someting imaginating when they make a practice for the show…are they on a diet..also…it’s not my business but I Love them. May God bless their show and may the message be good to the better world They are hoping.
