Full transparency here: Rancid is probably my fifth favorite group of all-time. Vampire Weekend is in the top ten as well, at least at the moment. So, all that makes the following news unbelievably, incredibly, and jaw-droppingly fantastic!
During a recent appearance with BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe, Vampire Weekend covered none other than Rancid’s 1995 hit “Ruby Soho”. Of course, Ezra Koenig and company have a history with punk music (note the collaborations with Fucked Up and the Joe Strummer shout outs on Contra). Plus, Rancid totally embodies a whole ska-pop-punk feel that makes the cover totally work for VW’s sound. But even still, talk about the most unexpected treat ever!
Ladies and gentlemen, via Pitchfork, the best cover of 2010!

TAGGED AS: Rancid, Vampire Weekend
Rancid is my favorite band; I like VW too, and I am a proponent of anyone covering anything. I have to say though, this is pretty lame. I think this is what Ruby Soho would sound like if it was rerecorded to be played in an elevator. I am disappointed.
Absolutely tremendous insult to such a great song by one of the greatest punk bands – Rancid. It just makes me appreciate Rancid so much more. Vampire Weekend is joke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Interesting rendition. Thought the choruses should have been stronger, though I’m guessing VW did the vocals like that on purpose. I’ve seen both bands live and thought they were both good. The original version is way better though. But props to them at least for their taste in good music. Not sure if I would call this version good though.
…I don’t think it was even the best cover of the day. This is terrible.
So much hate on this song… i think its a great cover. its not as if the Rancid song wasnt a pop attempt anywhoooooo.
Jesus fucking christ.
wow this sucks. bad cover choice. original is so much better.
shine on you asian diamond! it also makes me very happy haha. i respect VW more than i like them but this is definitely cool.
Amazing! Stupendous! It brings a smile to my Asian face when a great band covers an even better band!
