Jay-Z, Stevie Wonder, Dave Matthews lead Bonnaroo 2010’s opening announcement

Since 6:47 AM EST this morning, when Phoenix became the first band to confirm its participation for Bonnaroo 2010, we have been glued to our computers (literally), waiting for the rest of this year’s act to take similar action. And while it proved incredibly tedious, maddening, and downright inane (at least for those who endured the 14+ hour affair), in the end, the Manchester, TN festival got what it wanted — attention and lots of it.

As for the end result of said attention? An initial lineup announcement headed by Jay-Z, Stevie Wonder, Dave Matthews Band, and Kings of Leon. Other noteworthy acts include Jack White’s The Dead Weather, Jack Black’s Tenacious D, Weezer, Norah Jones, Damian Marley and Nas, LCD Soundsystem, Phoenix, Regina Spektor, Tori Amos, John Fogerty, and Jeff Beck.

Also set to appear at this year’s edition, which runs from June 10-13, are the Dropkick Murphys, John Prine, Jimmy Cliff, Michael Franti and Spearhead, The Avett Brothers, The Black Keys, Deadmau5, Against Me!, Les Claypool, the Zac Brown Band, Steve Martin & the Steep Canyon Rangers, and Rise Against, as well as a few familiar faces, including the Disco Biscuits, Medeski Martin & Wood, and Calexico.

A number of high-profile indie acts will also perform, including She & Him, Blitzen Trapper, The Dodos, Local Natives, The Gaslight Anthem, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Chromeo (who will be joined by the legendary Daryl Hall), Tokyo Police Club, and Neon Indian.

We should once again note that today’s announcement was billed as the initial lineup, and additional artists are expected to be named in the weeks ahead. We’ll of course update you when the information becomes available.

Tickets, available in the general admission and VIP varieties, are currently on sale and priced at $234.50 and $1,349.50 respectively. Payment plans are available, as are various rental packages. Hit up bonnarootickets.com for all the specifics.

Additional details regarding the festival itself can be read on bonnaroo.com. We also suggest bookmaring our Bonnaroo Outlook pages, as we’ll update it once additional lineup news is announced. Now would also be a good time to check out our recent interview with Bonnaroo co-founder Ashley Capps.

  • LOVE THIS LINEUP! Great Additions yesterday! Hopefully there wont be too many more good adds, there’s already more bands than i can see in a weekend, and it will only create conflicts! Cant wait to be cruising down 81 in the Vdubs, maybe you’ll pass me? There are PLENTY of festivals around people, if you dont like this lineup, please please please find a festy that you would enjoy and go, but dont come here and bitch about a lineup that you’re not going to see anyway

  • So what is the deal with Bonnaroo not having any sort of Big Jam Bands. The festival is getting too corporate. All I can say is that what happened to bonnaroo? Was one of the best festivals, now it seems as though it’s lacking a lot of elements. Better line up than the previous 2 years and probably the best lineup that any festival has this year. But unfortunately the Line up is still WEAK!! as are all the other festivals. The festival scene seems to be crapping down the toilet.

  • Great lineup but 311 would of been the cherry on top of the cake. Nick Hexum updated on his twitter that “the reason everybody thought they were playing is because of a Rolling Stone article but they actually are not playing.” He did say they should show up with the article and say “when do we play”…I fully agree with him on this one!….see everyone in June!!!!!

    KylemfColson February 17, 2010 at 11:06 am

  • 311 has not been confirmed by Bonnaroo yet.

  • “”"Last year, and the preceding several years, were jaw-dropping line-ups, which forced you to ask yourself “How did they possibly assemble this group of artists?”. This year isn’t terrible, but besides the Flaming Lips, we don’t have anything that feels like a unique event to Bonnaroo”"”

I hate to burst your bubble dude, but The Flaming Lips played back in 2003 and again at midnight saturday, Which Stage in 2007. THEY have played before. What makes bonnaroo 2010 unique are Stevie Wonder, Jay-Z, GWAR, Melvins, Deadmau5, Bassnectar, Thievery Corporation, 311, Weezer, Lotus, Jimmy Cliff, Baaba Maal, Kris Kristofferson, John Fogerty, Baroness, Tenacious D, She and Him, LCD Soundsystem, Tori Amos, Tinariwen, and many others!

    saltshakerfail February 11, 2010 at 2:21 am

  • Anyone who thinks Gwar plays just for the money is a fool.

    Zatzbatz February 10, 2010 at 10:41 pm

  • and also more empty promises from Bonnaroo…

they could’ve just tweeted it then put up an announcement on the site when the net returned. Everything doesn’t need to be huge and grandiose as they are making everything…

    ztnashville February 10, 2010 at 6:21 pm

  • From Bonnaroo’s Twitter:

“Faithful followers: Momma Nature is kicking NYC’s ass & our internet is down. Today’s surprises have sadly been postponed. Sorry!”

    More surprises!

  • It appears that Jay-Z has 99 problems but an unopposed late night spot aint one.

    anonymous February 10, 2010 at 4:18 pm

  • -Decent lineup with alot of mid grade bands playing.I love that weezer is playing(even though it’s like 10 years too late) and also Chromeo with Daryl hall is awesome, but most bands are playing other places, so people may follow headliners this year more than others in the past.(and right now Gorillaz and Thom Yorke are looking better then kings of leon and stevie wonder)
-Yea gwar is weird, but not one of the bigger names to worry yourself about.
-I’m upset with KOL and Jay Z. Jay Z is alreay the main guy at Coachella and KOL have played Bonnaroo in the past as one of the lesser acts..Let’s be original roo..
-There is still hope though. With one major headliner or a major comedian doing a headlining main stage like chris rock did. AND/OR Who is Gary Chardonnay??? David Bowie, Daft Punk ?!? I dunno, but let’s hear some rumors!
-I love the late night stuff though. Dark Side, Deadmau5, Dan Deacon, Disco Bisquits, Bassnectar…all that is gonna be crazy!!
Overall though, I go to Roo for the vacation and the good vibes, and too damn far from Cali so Roo it is!! I also live in South Florida and never miss Ultra…

  • this line up has turned us against one another….

    ztnashville February 10, 2010 at 3:41 pm

  • to the post below me.

no one fucking cares about your friend getting arrested.

    Anonymous February 10, 2010 at 3:25 pm

  • I was supposed to go to Roo last year, but had to sell my ticket because the person i was going with got arrested. I was anticipating this festival for a long time. Now i’m going to attempt to try to scrape enough money together and see if i can make it to Coachella, even if it’s full of LA fags…

    Pissed. February 10, 2010 at 2:28 pm

  • As someone who attended the farce that was Outside Lands last year, the moment that Tenacious D(ouche) was announced this festival lost all appeal.

That being said, it didn’t help Bonnaroo’s cause that the Coachella lineup was so good this year…or the fact that the announcement took 14 hours. It would have taken one hell of a lineup to compensate for the 6 minute wait to see “Mayer Hawthrone & the County” pop out of a giant cuckoo clock whacked by a slimy purple monster and a metalhead.

Alex Botsford February 10, 2010 at 2:18 pm

  • Gwar might be the worst thing ive ever heard, get this metal crap out of here. how do you go from phish to gwar? that shit isnt music, it hurts my ears, and gets their fans all riled up. poor decision AC & Superfly. This might be the beginning of the end for Bonnaroo. Im excited about most of the lineup, but this metal shit doesnt belong at this festival. Bring back the bands that would play for the love of music, and the moment, not for the money.

Disgruntled Phan February 10, 2010 at 1:56 pm

  • has anyone thought why they are trying to save money?

    JAY-Z

He is playing Coachella and they aren’t offering day passes this year. Therefore bringing in more money. I love Jay…but he’s the reason this line up is shit

    Anonymous February 10, 2010 at 1:35 pm

  • KOL and Stevie are both Nashville based….another reason to me that this is all about saving money.

KOL’s first two albums are good. The last two suck big time. There is zero unique about them headlining. They have played every festival known to man.

DMB- was obviously a safety valve…one chosen by someone who completely does not have a clue. MMJ should be in their spot…..if you aren’t going for a legendarily unique performance

What happened to Headliner’s= Classic staple + Major Reunion + Progressive Artist ?

    Will February 10, 2010 at 1:07 pm

  • Great lineup, seriously, I’m really pysched to see some of these bands. But this being my first year going to Bonnaroo I was curious if anybody knows when they usually announce the headliners? I’m going to wait to buy my ticket till they do.

    Nick February 10, 2010 at 12:48 pm

  • I’m really counting on a late addition for the jonas brothers!

Also I think it’s weird that gear is playing because I’ve seen them kill hippies on stage and rip their heads off. Have fun being covered in gwar blood and not being able to shower for 3 days!

    Zack February 10, 2010 at 12:45 pm

  • MSNBC.com, and a few other sites, are reporting Chris Rock and Jimmy Fallon are on the bill for 2010. Wonder if these are the new surprises Bonnaroo tweeted about this morning.

    PS February 10, 2010 at 12:34 pm

  • Agreed, they wanted conversation, they got conversation, the good, the bad, and the ugly

    mike February 10, 2010 at 11:47 am

  • Honestly I find all the “stop whining” posts much more annoying than the actual criticisms.

    Anonymous February 10, 2010 at 11:46 am

  • hey i just realized, no form of warren haynes either, bummer. i cant remember a bonnaroo without warren haynes

    mike February 10, 2010 at 11:43 am

  • ztnashville,

THANK YOU! If this was 2 years ago people would be pumped about KOL. It became cool recently to hate on them because they’ve gained commercial success and they refuse to like a band that gets regular mainstream radio play. Yes hearing “use somebody” on the soft rock station is pretty annoying, but they’re still an awesome band.

    rich February 10, 2010 at 11:35 am

  • Alex,

Please don’t feel guilty, bad or responsible for this line up or any information you provided us. There is no need to explain yourself as you just run a rumor blog and you do a damn good job running it. Do you think the dude that runs MLBtradrumors apologizes to his readers of his blog when a trade or free agent signing doesn’t come through? Nope… No worries, my friend. Thanks for all that you and the peeps at COS do for us and me, as it makes the day a little more bearable.

    Mazdawg February 10, 2010 at 11:34 am

  • DMB- Really fun live

KOL- Honest rock band who has gotten popular and a little more poppy.

People are mad because DMB and KOL are what they consider “Pop” and overlook how Good they are. Especially KOL. Everyone hates them cause “Use Somebody” is popular and they haven’t heard YOUTH & YOUNG MANHOOD or AHA SHAKE HEARTBREAK. listen to those and shut the hell up.

BONNAROO WILL ADD ANOTHER HEADLINER! I would bet that it was delayed by a headliner dropping and they are scrambling to get someone.

    ztnashville February 10, 2010 at 11:26 am

  • To everyone who is complaining about the lineup. Don’t go to Bonnaroo, save your money. Move on. I would be happy if they added a few more big names, but I know complaining isn’t going to change the lineup at all. That’s the lineup take it or leave. I’m going regardless and so are thousands of other people.

Quit whining February 10, 2010 at 11:23 am

  • For those angry at the disappointed masses, I always hear the same argument “You are impossible to please, there’s nobody they could have gotten which would have excited you.”

Yet I’d say, I don’t think there is a line-up Superfly could have produced that would possibly have let you sunshine-pumpers down.

Last year, and the preceding several years, were jaw-dropping line-ups, which forced you to ask yourself “How did they possibly assemble this group of artists?”. This year isn’t terrible, but besides the Flaming Lips, we don’t have anything that feels like a unique event to Bonnaroo, and many of the most-hyped acts are shared with Coachella.

Also, I feel like we are kidding ourselves hanging our hopes on additions. Every year people get excited, only to find out that the top 40 artists are always on the initial line-up.

As someone who planned on attending both Coachella and Bonnaroo, yesterday’s announcement only accomplished one thing: I bought my Coachella ticket.
