The Charlatans — or to us Yanks, The Charlatans UK — will have released their debut album Some Friendly 20 years ago this October. To celebrate the occasion, the britpop band fronted by Tim Burgess will be remastering and reissuing the LP, reports Slicing Up Eyeballs. Not only that, but they’ll be playing the album in full this May at London Roundhouse and Primavera Sound (see website for ticket info).

No release date has been set for the reissue, but Beggars Banquet back-catalog site Beggars Archive released some juicy details last Thursday. It will be a two-disc set, disc one featuring the original album (with the original vinyl track list, meaning “The Only One I Know” appears on the second disc) and disc two containing 19 tracks of b-sides, singles, outtakes, and BBC session recordings. However, while this sounds pretty cool, it’s hard not to be let down by what could have been. The Beggars Archive had planned a multi-disc Omnibus box set featuring live recordings, demos, and more bonus material, but couldn’t come to an agreement with the band’s management.

It seems likely the band’s 1992 sophomore effort Between 10th and 11th will receive similar treatment; both were announced to get box set reissues last year.

Unfortunate, but the two-disc sets should be worthwhile for fans. And on a high note, drummer Jon Brookes blogged at the beginning of the year about things to come for The Charlatans: “We are hopeful for a new release in early summer time and this could hopefully coincide with some festival dates and touring.” No dates announced besides the London and Primavera Sound gigs, though.
