What do you get when you take the Pills, Thrills and Bellyaches out of the Happy Mondays? You get Hot Chip. Last night they took the stage of the Jimmy Fallon show to play the title track to their new album, One Life Stand.

Hot Chip isn’t so much a band that bursts to life on stage, that is if you were expecting them to turn around and party hard like the Happy Mondays. Their songs, like “One Life Stand” are reserved more for your everyday feelings, not your drug-induced ones. What you hear in person is pretty much what you hear on the record.  What you do get in person though is some clarification. Seeing them live, like here, helps explain where all those mellow, after hours sounds are coming from. A steel drum and a hint of The Roots add an upbeat surprise to this live performance.

And if you want to hear those after hours melodies early tonight, you can catch their free and secret show tonight at NYC’s Highline Ballroom with Free Energy.
