Here are your Lollapalooza 2010 headliners…

By Alex Young on March 10th, 2010 in Festival News/Rumor, News

If you combine the words of Chicago Tribune’s Greg Kot, The Daily Swarm, our own independent scooper “Johnny J,” and a brand new report from Time Out Chicago, your 2010 headliners for the Lollapalooza Music Festival are: The Strokes, Arcade Fire, Lady Gaga, Green Day, Soundgarden, and Phoenix(?).

Other acts expected to appear are Bright Eyes, Dirty Projectors, Hot Chip, The xx, and Yeasayer. Maybe The Flaming Lips, The National, Public Enemy, Against Me!, The Hold Steady, and The New Pornographers too.

Stay tuned to our Festival Outlook for all the latest updates. An official announcement is expected in April.

Lollapalooza 2010 takes place from August 6-8 at Grant Park in Chicago, Illinois.

  • i hope arcade fire and dirty projectors don’t play on the same day, because i can’t camp out at two stages at the same time.

  • I hope Green Day plays all three nights. And every one of their side projects fills out the middle tier for one of the days, and then every band covers a Green Day song.

Then I hope Ian Curtis plays an aftershow at the Vic, alongside a beatbox machine and James Iha.

Only then will I be truly happy.

  • “I feel like all six headliners of a big summer music festival doesn’t just leak like this, especially from people named “Johnny J”.”

I guess you don’t remember Lollapalooza last year then…

  • sooooo fucking pumped for lady gaga, the strokes, and arcade fire. PLEASE let this all be true, well except for green day.

  • I would like to present Exhibit A – The Coachella Poster. Phoenix is on the third line…and it’s a hipster festival. Exhibit B – Bonnaroo lineup…not even close to the top of the lineup.

Phoenix isn’t headlining. Bright Eyes would get that slot before Phoenix.

Stephen Clonts March 10, 2010 at 11:18 pm

    • Putting my feelings aside about whether or not Phoenix will (or should) headline, comparing Bonnaroo and Lolla is not always the best indicator. Aside from this year, Bonnaroo tends to attract bigger headlining acts (and in larger numbers) than Lolla.

Again, I feel like having Phoenix possibly headline is a bit odd, but assuming that they are going to headline I feel like I understand where C3 is coming from with this idea. It is also hard for me to imagine who else C3 could persuade to play the festival if the 6th headliner is not the Flips or Beastie Boys, assuming they prefer to go with a band not already signed on to play the festival. I’m not so sure Bright Eyes would headline over Phoenix, either. Granted I don’t know as much about them, but from what I can gather their popularity doesn’t seem to reach as highly as Phoenix.

    • Considering that Bright Eyes is disbanding in the near future, I can definitely see them headlining a night over Phoenix. A farewell tour means higher billing.

  • I have to agree that hands down KOL was muuuch bigger last summer than Phoenix is now. They’d also played lolla two years prior, and had been a ‘buzz band’ for a far longer time in the US than Phoenix has been since Wolfgang Amadeus. Also, I think the arenas thing is not a very good indication, as KOL was headlining Glastonbury and every other Euro fest out there, while Phoenix is still considered a upper mid tier act at fests this year. I saw Phoenix this past Sept and they were outstanding live, but to the mass public, there is not enough recognition to hold down a headliner spot. Racs spot? Absolutely. Headliner? No, I really don’t think so. I guess we’ll know for sure in a month or so.

  • You guys who keep bringing up Flaming Lips do know they are probably not playing? Don’t you?

    andrew March 10, 2010 at 9:20 pm

    • It’s looking more and more like they won’t be there, but considering the fact that many are expecting them to be there, people will continue to assume so until it is confirmed that they will not be.

      MAC March 10, 2010 at 9:48 pm

  • uhh no. Phoenix headlining is in no way like KOL headlining. they are no where near as big as KOL both state side and internationally. They’ve been around for awhile but do not have the acclaim that KOL has.

    Ztnashville March 10, 2010 at 8:45 pm

    • It’s very much the same thing. Certainly Phoenix’s level of fame right now does not compare with Kings of Leon’s level of fame right now. However, relative to this point in time last year, one could easily make the argument that Phoenix is in a very similar situation. Like Chadams said, Lolla is hoping to benefit from the fact that they are a buzz band that has been generating broader appeal over the last year, and certainly having them as a headliner on the official lineup of one of the biggest North American festivals will only help to build more buzz, and you can bet their music will be a staple of their advertising and marketing this spring/summer. Phoenix in many ways could even be considered a better choice to headline because they can easily appeal to both the mainstream audience and the indie rock audience (which KoL lost quickly upon the release of their last album). Also, I hope you mean that Phoenix doesn’t have the fame that KoL has, as opposed to acclaim because they definitely have more acclaim than KoL.

      MAC March 10, 2010 at 9:45 pm

      • It may not make sense because C3’s trying to make it make sense. It’s them giving Phoenix more buzz and trying to provide them with more popularity as a result of their headlining appearance this year (should that truly be the case).

Still in support of all the headliners. Lolla’s bringing TWO arena artists (GD & GaGa) back to the festival scene AND serving as the return to stage for both Strokes & AF, who’ve both been away for too long. Add another solid get for the reunited Soundgarden & I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt on Phoenix as a headliner (which I’m fine with for the most part). All (except GD & Phoenix) would have been huge gets for Coachella, but the best Lolla can do is rival Coachella’s gets for this year. I’d say they’re both looking evenly matched to one another.

        Chadams March 11, 2010 at 9:20 pm

        • I’m honestly more interested in everything elsee on Coachella’s lineup compared to their three main headlining acts (Jay-Z, Muse, Gorillaz). Pavement, Thom Yorke, and LCD Soundsystem are what I would be truly excited about. Luckily Pitchfork pulled of LCD and Pavement and Thom Yorke and co. will be at Aragon this April.

          MAC March 11, 2010 at 10:45 pm

  • Phoenix makes sense when you remember that Kings of Leon were a headliner last year. They’re simply trying to replicate that position with Phoenix of being a buzz band on the verge of greater success, like KOL was last year. Are Phoenix going to headline MSG a year later? Doubtful, but that’s Lolla/C3’s line of reasoning, from what it looks like. (MGMT probably would’ve been a slightly better choice, IMO.)

I think the FLips probably didn’t get that 6th spot because they’re playing Milwaukee this summer (I think), ergo radius clause, because they were PFork headliners last year, and because they’re probably not that large of a draw considering just how many festivals they’ve played over the years.

I also still don’t understand the fuss over Gaga, she’s a multiplatinum artist and an iconoclast. Which translates into crazy ticket sales and remaining cred, despite what indie kids and fest rats may think. I think she’s a strong headliner choice (as are all the others, if you view it from the right angle) and is a logical step considering how much of a pop music festival Lolla really is.

    Chadams March 10, 2010 at 8:24 pm

  • Is it odd that Phoenix is supposedly headlining? Yes, especially if the Flips are going to be there. Is it that big of a deal? No. Just look at Kings of Leon last year. When it was announced that they would be headlining, it was a serious head-scratcher, but by the time the festival rolled around, people flooded the north end of Grant Park to see them play. Phoenix is a great band and if they’re headlining, I’m not complaining. Even with Green Day and GaGa, this group of headliners is much better than last year and it’s looking like the undercard is going to be phenomenal.

    MAC March 10, 2010 at 8:21 pm

  • The National would make a better headliner than Phoenix… not to mention the Lips. Maybe they can convince Rage to play a show outside of Britain this year. Minus Lady Gaga though, I don’t think these are that bad of a group of headliners.

    NJmiami March 10, 2010 at 8:16 pm

  • If Phoenix actually headlines Lollapalooza that’s a fucking joke…

Rike Moffman March 10, 2010 at 8:00 pm

  • I feel like all six headliners of a big summer music festival doesn’t just leak like this, especially from people named “Johnny J”. I mean I don’t doubt it happening, but I wouldn’t be surprised if other names showed up in those spots. Basically, I’m not rushing to buy my ticket just yet. I almost made that mistake with Bonnaroo this year. And then the lineup dropped.

    negativenegative March 10, 2010 at 7:05 pm

  • I actually really like most of those headlines. Soundgarden and the Strokes are two of my favorite bands and I’ve never been able to see them live. Arcade fire always puts on an amazing show and although new to the scene, Phoenix will probably put on a good show too. Definitely not the highest caliber of headliners, but good bands nonetheless.

I don’t really care about green day or lady gaga though.

Justin Pitts March 10, 2010 at 6:40 pm

  • these are the worst headliners i’ve seen at a festival…ever i’d go as far as to say.

sure, there is no conflict, but there is no reason to stay at the festivla passed 8pm now…complete and utter garbage, i am so let down….coachella gets gorillaz, sasquatch gets massive attack, bonnaroo has jay-z.

lolla is going to have to have a really really good supporting act for me to want to spend any money and go this year, and i was realllly excited too….sigh

    mpah March 10, 2010 at 6:22 pm

  • Would they really have Phoenix headline over the Lips? I know Phoenix’s new album is more popular, but the Lips just headlined over Phoenix at the XRT show and have been mentioned as headliner number 6 by others.

    timtimtim March 10, 2010 at 5:59 pm

  • I really cannot see Phoenix headlining over The Flaming Lips.

Stephen Clonts March 10, 2010 at 5:53 pm

  • I don’t think people get the headliners at Lolla. If you don’t like one of the headliners, it’s a good thing. It means that you won’t have a conflict that night. I’m sort of glad Phoenix is a headliner, as I’ve seen them three times now and don’t plan on a fourth. So, hopefully they’ll be up against someone like Green Day, The Strokes, or Soundgarden.

Michael Roffman March 10, 2010 at 5:53 pm

  • lady gaga really gets me down, i feel like she is such a waste of a spot
