Six years ago, The Libertines broke up. Since then, rumors regarding their impending reunion have overwhelmed/fatigued the blogosphere as much as fronthman Pete Doherty’s mischief. (Note the examples here, here, here, and here). Yet, as it turns out, all it really took to turn those rumors into reality was for the Reading and Leeds Music Festival to pony up $2.25 million.

According to the Guardian, the acclaimed outfit will reunite for its first performance since 2004 at this summer’s U.K. based Reading and Leeds, set to take place from August 27-29. A source told the Guardian that the group would be receiving a huge sum for their performance, rumored to be around £1.5m ($2.25m). The Sun also confirms the news and notes that “further” festival appearances and new material could follow if all goes well.

An official announcement is expected to be announced tonight at 7pm BST. Other acts rumored to be playing this year’s Reading and Leeds include Arcade Fire, Blink-182, Green Day, and Guns N’ Roses.
