When people tell others about the Beastie Boys, it’s usually something along the lines of “You know? Those three Jewish guys that rap.” But that’s not a sleight against them; unless, of course, you’re a couple of southerners and that statement is said with bitterness. It’s a compliment. It’s a cultural benefit, if that makes any sense. On the whole, the Jewish youth  across the world (myself included) appreciate the New York rappers. It kind of gives us some edge, and makes up for our overall lack of athleticism.

Keeping up with his culture, the Beastie’s Adam Yauch recently bought the rights to an independent documentary about the Holocaust. Directed by Yael Hersonski, A Film Unfinished follows the story of a Nazi propaganda film about the Warsaw ghetto. The film premiered at Sundance Film Festival this past January to much applause.

“This movie really affected me,” Yauch told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s an incredibly powerful film, not just because of the rare Nazi propaganda footage it shows but also the captivating way the filmmakers tell the story.”

Yauch’s film company Oscilloscope Pictures plans to debut the film on a single screen in Manhattan come August 18th. However, the limited engagement will expand shortly following the exclusive premiere.

While there’s no news on the Beastie camp, it’s good to see Yauch, who’s currently recovering from cancer, feeling positive and in the press again. Here’s hoping we’ll see him more.
