If you can tell a lot about a person by the company they keep, then Brooklyn songstress Julianna Barwick is in the right clique.

Barwick, whose dreamscapes of layered, ambient a cappella, was drowned out by crowds and metal bands at last month’s SXSW, has just signed with Asthmatic Kitty Records.

She joins a roster that is very unique, to say the least. The label is home to a bevy of groundbreaking artists including Sufjan Stevens, My Brightest Diamond, and Roberto Carlos Lange. Barwick recently completed a tour with Lange, who performs as Helado Negro.

Her live performances cannot be missed. Unlike her festival experience in Austin, Barwick will be playing small rooms that are more suited to her sound. I mean, would you rather see a pretty girl using just a microphone and loop pedal to create ethereal murals of sound in a quiet art space, or under a big ass tent in some desert parking lot?

Asthmatic Kitty plans to release her next solo album and the results of collaborations between tourmates on her spring trek through the eastern seaboard and Midwest (with two stops in Canada). For now you can pick up a copy of her latest EP, Florine, through her website. Also, check out WNYC’s video segment on how Barwick builds compositions. (She uses Garage Band?!)
