We’ve never been to Columbia, SC. All we know about it (thanks to Wikipedia) is that it’s nicknamed “The Capital of Southern Hospitality” and that US News & World Report named it one of 2009′s best affordable places to retire. But add another accolade to that list in the form of experimental punk jam band Thank God. The outfit (which happens to be made up of old Antischism and Guyana Punch Line members) proves that not all things from the South have to be quaint and bluesy with the title track “Ice/Age”.

Have you ever been screamed at for three minutes? Now, have you ever been screamed at for three minutes and liked it? The track is all piss and vinegar from the start; lots of grainy, demonic screaming that does its best to overpower a frantic and rambling guitar that sounds like its being played by violently beating it. It’s total high energy that burns out into what can be described best as an experimental jam breakdown; a few minutes of restraint with the faint bubbles of some seriously angry rock music with a bad case of bipolar disorder. It’ll leave you feeling anything but feeling chilled.

Ice/Age is scheduled to be released on July 20th via Exotic Fever Records. The band’s also on tour with An Albatross for the month of July.
