As a young person, the first name I can remember knowing in electronic music is Paul Oakenfold. In the 90’s, he was electronica, although the kids in high school (or younger) couldn’t tell you why he was famous or what he sounded like, only that his name associated connotative fantasies of models, flashing lights and secret clubs. And isn’t that what being a legend is, someone famous for being the best, their reputation more recognizable then their actual music?

Of course, legends can also back up their reputation, something Mr. Oakenfold will prove once again with the release of his new record, Pop Killer. As deserving as pop may be of a smackdown, the album also embraces some heavy hitters of pop music, or at least utility players. Biilboard has confirmed fellow legends Red Hot Chili Peppers on the British D.J.’s new album, along with the Cee-Lo half  of Gnarls Barkley and One Republic’s Ryan Tedder. The album is nearly finished and should be released by mid-summer, though some details still remain murky. Like, what in the hell are the Chili Peppers doing on this record? Oakenfold won’t reveal much, but we do know that it is a reworking of an old tune, while Tedder has a brand new track to offer. And maybe even more guests?

“I think people will be shocked with who I’ve got,” he told Billboard. “I haven’t signed the contract yet, but I think people will be very interested in what they hear.”

Now I’m not one to tell legends what to do, but all this secrecy may be a bit much. It’s not like we are buying squares for our Oakenfold Day office party. But if anyone is, I want Lindsay Lohan.
