So Percussion and Matmos bring super weird music on tour

By Harry Painter on May 14th, 2010 in News, Tour

What happens when you combine the experimental electronica of Matmos and the careful compositions of So Percussion in a live setting? An unbelievable show might be a good bet. Baltimore’s (via San Francisco) Matmos and the Brooklyn percussion quartet are touring in June, supporting their debut collaboration Treasure State (out July 13th on Cantaloupe; digital copy July 8th).

The collaboration begins in New York City June 9th, crisscrossing the States through Chicago and Minneapolis before finishing up in the Pacific Northwest, with a final show in Portland on June 20th.

The live show can be expected to be very different from the record — there will be a mix of improvisation and straightforward play-throughs, expanded, compacted, and even chopped and screwed versions of the songs. A press release also claims the live instruments will include “vibraphones, drums, aluminum space blankets and beercans, birdcalls and horns, custom synths, laptops” and, of course, an amplified cactus. And just for good measure, the show will be armed with Quadrophonic sound, which the bands will provide themselves.

The track titles for the album are out (listed below), and they might be a good indicator of which obscure animal noise belongs to which song. If you like weird instrumental music, mark your calendar.

Ticketmaster has the tickets, and we have the details below. We also have a free mp3 of opening track “Treasure”! You’re welcome.
