It’s been over a decade since DeVotchKa began its musical escapades as the backing band for famous burlesque dancer (and Marilyn Manson’s ex-wife) Dita von Tesse. Along the way, the quartet has garnered a significant underground following by fusing rock, punk, and gypsy folk. For a band that features the Greek bouzouki, accordion, and melodica, however, the road to mainstream appeal is always more daunting.

2006 served as the breakout year for DeVotchKa as the foursome scored Little Miss Sunshine and performed a breakout set at Bonnaroo. The band has continued this momentum, featuring two singles on Showtime’s Weeds in 2008, touring with legendary David Byrne in 2009, and recently wrapping up a stint on the road with fellow gypsy rockers Gogol Bordello.

DeVotchKa is now equipped to attack the popular music audience. Frontman Nick Urata recently composed the soundtrack for Love You Phillip Morris, starring Ewan McGregor and Jim Carrey, and the collective recently opened up for Muse in Paris, performing to a crowd of over 90,000.

While continuing to play live shows near its home base of Denver, DeVotchKa has recently returned to Wavelab Studio in Tucson, AZ to record their sophomore Anti- Records release. Few details have been released about the upcoming album, but Philadelphia’s WHYY recently featured the outfit for their “On Canvas” segment. The video, which you can view below, includes great concert footage and some interesting sound bites from Urata. Their remaining live dates also follows.
