Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner is heading for the movies. Not content with being the frontman of not one, but two critically acclaimed UK bands, Turner is set to follow in the footsteps of Trent Reznor and David Byrne and become the latest musician to create a movie score. The Brooklyn based Turner is working with James Ford of Simian Mobile Disco on a film titled Submarine, which is expected to see release alongside the movie in 2011. Ford and Turner have previous history, with the former having produced albums for both the Arctic Monkeys and The Last Shadows Puppets.

The movie is an adaptation of first time novelist James Dunthorne’s coming of age tale set in Wales. The story centers on a 15-year old Swansea boy Oliver Tate as he attempts to lose his virginity and keep his parents together. The novel has been favorably compared to Salinger’s classic Catcher in the Rye.

This is is director Richard Ayoade’s feature debut, having previously worked on music videos as well as acting himself. Ayoade is currently starring on UK TV screens as Moss in Channel 4′s The IT Crowd. He also directed Arctic Monkeys at The Apollo. The project is party financed by Ben Stiller’s Red Hours Film Company, Film4, and the UK Film Council, amongst others, and stars Paddy Considine and Craig Roberts in the role of Oliver Tate. More details as they become available.
