The Associated Press reports the tunnel served as the sole entrance to the festival, which bills itself as the world’s largest techno music party. After the festival grounds became overcrowded, German authorities reportedly closed off the tunnel’s exit, causing many inside to panic and trample over one another.
City officials chose not to evacuate the rest of the festival as a way of trying to prevent an even bigger outbreak of panic, and many people continued partying, unaware of the deaths, reports The AP.
At least 1.4 million people attended this year’s Love Parade, which greatly exceeded the original expectation of 800,000.
Originally set to run through Sunday, this year’s bill was to feature the likes of Tiesto, David Guetta, Booka Shade, Boys Noize, and Fedde Le Grand. Due to the tragedy, organizers have canceled the remainder of this year’s festival and said they will not continue the festival in the future.
