Sometimes we on the Internet jump to conclusions when it comes to big news. Heck, Chuck Biscuits ended up dead for a day before we all collectively came to our senses. But if we ever hoped that we weren’t overreacting, it’s probably now, as, according to SlicingUpEyeballs, a recent photo of The Cars posted on the band’s Facebook page has them back in the studio working on… something. Hey, that’s not nothing!

The photo, posted July 13th, shows frontman Ric Ocasek with guitar in hand in front of a laptop, Elliot Easton strumming along on guitar, the perpetually retired David Robinson back behind the kit, and keyboardist Greg Hawkes playing bass, taking over for Benjamin Orr, who died of pancreatic cancer in 2000. And while the pic should be definitive proof that this is their first time recording material since 1987′s Door to Door, Hawkes told the Boston Globe recently that he can’t confirm whether they’re recording Cars material, songs for an Ocasek solo album, or “just fooling around.” He did cryptically add, “I hate to be vague, but I really can’t say. It’s a crazy world.” And if all that weren’t frustrating enough, the band posted yet another pic on July 22nd of a mysterious man in the studio. Cut the mysterious act, gang!

This seems to be the closest fans have gotten to a reunion, unless you count 2005′s The New Cars, which featured Easton and Hawkes touring with Todd Rundgren doing old Cars songs. Either way, enjoy both pics below.  As always, stay tuned for more reunion news as it’s announced (or posted).
