Directed by Amir Bar-Lev (The Tillman Story), the yet-to-be-titled film was written by Topper Lilien (Dungeons & Dragons), who pulled most of the material from Robert Greenfield’s 1997 biography, Dark Star, a critically successful collection of oral history from Garcia’s family and friends. As a result, the screenplay sticks fairly close to the truth, at least Bar-Lev tends to think so.
“Topper Lilien’s daring script does justice to Garcia and steadfastly resists cliche,” Bar-Lev tells Variety.
What’s exciting is that Bona Fide partners Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa (Little Miss Sunshine) are involved. In addition to the exceptional Little Miss Sunshine, they’re responsible for other critical smashes like Cold Mountain and Little Children. Pretty heavy stuff.
No reports yet on who’s to play the lead role. But, while we’re not casting directors, we’d like to offer one casting suggestion: Adam Goldberg.
As always, we’ll keep you posted as more information surfaces.
