According to the announcement on the the band’s official site, the duo, who will be working alongside choreographer Javier De Frutos, were asked by the Royal Ballet’s Ivan Putrov to compose the score for a production over four years ago; the band chose the Christian Andersen story of “a princess, a kingdom, and of two very different approaches to the task of creating something extraordinary.” Sounds right up their alley. In the same statement, the band said they were “fascinated by giving our music a theatrical context” as they see their move from the dance-floor of discotheque’s across the world to London’s Sadler’s Wells dance house next March 22nd-26th a “logical development.”
Pet Shop Boys fans will note that this isn’t their first foray into the theater. In 2001, with help form playwright Jonathan Harvey, they wrote Closer To Heaven. Plus, their songs served as the inspiration for the Australian pop-musical Seriously: Pet Shop Boys Reinterpreted.
