With the September release of his self titled fifth studio album in September, Pete Yorn will start to rival Ryan Adams in terms of sheer release (Yorn’s at three in 14 months; Adams finishes an album every time he takes a bath). And while Adams has Mandy Moore, Yorn has an even more powerful musical soulmate: Frank Black.

However, if you thought working for the Pixies frontman would be time spent in music nerd heaven, think twice. As Black said in a press release, “I stripped Pete down a whole bunch. We battled in the best sort of way. I tried to get the session into a fearless and raw place, and to his artistic credit Pete took his songwriting to a fearless and raw place.” Seems like that kind of degradation works as we get to enjoy “Velcro Shoes” without all those emotional scars.

Despite the process it took to get the collection of songs, “Velcro Shoes” in particular is pretty light, with content harking back to Yorn’s childhood playing with toys and wearing his fresh velcro kicks out of the store. With a chorus that includes the line, “Maybe this time we’ll build a go-kart and drive around the world”, the simple, straight-forward, guitar-centric nostalgia trip has all the complexity of a John Fogerty track (plus quadruple the rocking-ness) and the absolute simplicity and sheer child-like energy to make it a true emotional trip down Memory Lane.

Pete Yorn will hit stores September 28th via Vagrant Records. Stay tuned for more news, including fall tour dates, as they’re announced.
