After a lukeworm and polarizing critical responses to their sophomore effort Congratulations, MGMT frontman Andrew Van-Wyngarden suggested their label (Columbia) will be taking a larger part in the recording process of their next album.
“We’ve been looking at relationships with the label during the recording process and it’s quite different this time,” Van-Wyngarden said in a recent interview with UK’s Daily Record. “They’ll be more involved and not give us as much freedom.”
Though Columbia might keep a more watchful eye on the band’s third album, Van-Wyngarden seems happy with the processes so far. “We have some ideas and have been talking about possible directions of where to go next. We are just in much more positive mental states than when we wrote Congratulations. We’re less anxious.”
This interview comes at the heels of MGMT drummer Will Berman leaving stage Sunday at a show in Manchester, UK after an unruly roustabout in the crowd hurled a beer bottle of piss beer and struck Berman in the chest (via Anti Music). The band didn’t realize their drummer was gone until half-way through the next song “Handshake”, and when Berman refused to come back on stage, the band played their closer “Kids” to a backing track. The crowd reportedly didn’t mind, and danced to the song the bulk of them probably came to hear anyway.
