We were just wondering if that Julie Taymor directed U2 scored, $50 million Spider-Man musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark was ever going to see the light of day. But after many delays, it was back on schedule in July and things were looking just dandy for this production.

And then today, Peter Parker (played and sung by Reeve Carney) stood up in front of a small audience on Good Morning America and debuted the song “Boy Falls from the Sky” (via NY Magazine). Is it about Spider-Man slinging web to save the world? Is it about a cool battle he’s going to have with The Green Goblin? Mmm not as much as it’s about Spidey workin through some things. He wants to break it down for you — just get real — by spinning webs of mad truth:

You can change your mind, but you cannot change your heart.
It’s a compass and a map; the key to the chart.
I’ve been myself, if I knew I’d become[??]
You can fly too high and get too close to the sun.
See how the boy falls from the sky. ”

Carney sure matches Bonos proclivity for intense emotive mugging. The music actually sounds pretty good, though I would have to agree with NY Mag that this sounds similar to U2′s other big superhero song.

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark previews in November and opens in December on Broadway.
