The press release lauds Michael McDonald as “one of the music world’s most recognizable voices” and I’m hesitant to disagree. We all have our Michael McDonald impressions (mine is particularly stellar), we’ve seen the sketches, and he’s even recorded with Grizzly Bear. But do we actually really like the guy? I’m serious. Is his fame perpetuated by the meme-ability of his ironic persona, or are we admitting there there is something enjoyable about his music? I fall somewhere in between, because there’s something I legitimately like about his velvety voice appropriating soul music.

Two moments, both occurring one minute and ten seconds into each clip below just make me laugh. In “I’ll Be Home For Christmas”, he adds a “ch” in front of “home” and it’s hilarious, and in “Takin’ It To The Streets” he sings “You don’t know me but I’m your brahh….” and fades out and it’s hilarious. I honestly don’t know why anymore.

So if you’ve got a bead on why you like Michael McDonald, he’s got this Christmas DVD called This Christmas out, well, now. It’s sure to make a great ironic gift for your friend, or a great honest gift for your aunt. You can purchase it over at Amazon.com. Check out the sneak peak below, and maybe you’ll want to spend this Christmas nestled with a cup of hot cocoa, watching McDonald’s inimitable alabaster hair and funky white-boy groove. Some say irony is dead, but I think it is alive and well and can make white people over forty dance real awkwardly.
