Watch: Perfume Genius covers Neil Young’s “Helpless”

I had the opportunity to see Mike Hadreas, aka Perfume Genius, perform in Chicago the other month, and over those 35 minutes, he stole our breaths with haunting ballads from his remarkably strong debut, Learning. What we didn’t get were any covers, such as the poignant Crosby, Stills, Nash and most notably Young’s “Helpless” (via Prefix). Hadreas’ doubtful warble rests nicely over the simplicity of Young’s walk down memory lane, and also insinuates the potential for Hadreas to really grow as a songwriter in the coming years.
