Though nearly 35 years into their alternative rock careers, English post-punk gods Wire show little sign of aging. In the last year, the band played a slew of live dates, dropped a comprehensive bootleg collection, and now, to top it all, they have announced their 12th studio album and first new material in two years, Red Barked Tree.

The 11-track effort will be released via the band’s own Pink Flag label on January 10th in the UK and a day later in the US. The album will be available digitally starting December 20th, and fans ordering it will also receive a free copy of the Strays EP, which features live favorites that never made it onto any studio releases.

We’re promised that the album will feature Wire’s “full palette of style and nuance,” namely those who like a bit of pop in their music and those yearn to be at the bleeding edge of avant-rock. One of the new cuts, “Two Minutes”, is available to sample right now over at Pitchfork, and judging from a listen or two, the band makes good on its promise of “barking sledgehammer art-punk.” All in all, things look pretty damn good for the new record.

Also, Wire hints at some live plans in support of the new record, but more on that as it surfaces.
