Gleeks Anonymous: “Glee: Episode 2.8: Furt”

I’m going to say this in advance. Tonight’s episode of Glee was heavy on plot, and very light on music. When we’re talking about light on music, I mean light; there were only four songs total (almost all of which were in the last 20 minutes of the episode), one of which was simply a musical song. And I know that this website isn’t focused on musical songs, despite my own personal preferences.

If you don’t know who Carol Burnett is, then you can go—ahem. Sorry. Former media student about to come out and rant. Let’s just say, if you’re not familiar with her, she is an absolute comedy legend. Burnett showed up in this latest episode as Sue’s mother Doris, a Nazi hunter (Someone get in touch with the History Channel, considering how much they’re friggen obsessed with World War II). She did have a comedy show for 11 years, and her talent wasn’t a disappointment in Glee. But once again, this isn’t the website for me fangirling over her. Sigh!

One of the main themes of the episode was marriage. Kurt’s dad, Burt, was getting married to Finn’s mom, Carol, this episode. Let’s d’awwwww at this. From a purely plot point of view, this was a long awaited scene. And it was adorable.

Meanwhile, Sue…wishes to marry herself. Why? Because it’s Sue. Questioning her is pointless. With her “wedding” came the first number of the night, a duet between her and Burnett. “Ohio”, from the musical Wonderful Town, was…well. Sang well enough by the two. I did enjoy the comedy factor of it, and how they managed to work the song into the situation, but it did come off as somewhat awkward.

Onto the main event, the Hummel-Hudson wedding. Two of Bruno Mars‘ songs set the scene, with “Marry You” sung by the kids during the procession down the aisle, and Finn singing “Just the Way You Are” to Kurt during the reception. Oh lord. The cheese on “Marry You”. The cheese. I’ll forgive them a little since weddings traditionally are cheesy, but I really hope that my own wedding doesn’t have high school kids spazzing down the aisle.

I’ve never been a huge fan of Cory Monteith’s voice, but when he sung “Just the Way You Are” to Kurt, I may have melted a little. Yes, it was another incredibly cheesy song, but worked perfectly in what it was supposed to: cement the relationship between Kurt and Finn as stepbrothers.

The one other song in the episode was “Sway”, a song originally written by Pablo Beltrán Ruiz quite a number of decades ago, but whose English version got made popular by Dean Martin. In this episode, it was essentially background music: Will singing it at the reception. Not much to say about it, other than that I wouldn’t mind hiring that guy for my own wedding reception.

I really wish I could say more about this episode, because as a Glee fan, I honestly loved it. It was the culmination of some of the subplots going on, and they didn’t do such a shabby job at it. Music-wise, however, this song didn’t have all that much to offer. What it did was good, but this episode focused much more on plot than it did on music.

Such is Glee, really. American Idol is starting up soon. Are they going to cut off Glee again in favor of it? Sob. When it comes to a TV show, plot is the major point, after all… But this is also Glee, of all shows. C’mon, man. You can show us a little more music-wise.
