The Drake Hotel, located on the thriving west end of Queen Street, has become one of Toronto’s most formidable hot spots for cultural enthusiasts since its grand re-opening in 2004. Thanks to the lush decor and vibrant atmosphere of the bar/lounge, the year-round open Sky Yard Patio, and the contemporary music happenings at The Drake Underground, this picturesque Hotel is one the more impressive venues located in Toronto. The Drake is renown for being a hotbed of culture, merging the grandeur of vintage architecture with a contemporary intricacy that’s both unique and exciting.

Like other locales in the trendy Gallery District, the Drake Hotel is actively involved in the flourishing arts/music community, housing a dazzling assortment of paintings and designs and catering to a frequenting posh clientele. The ambience of the upstairs lounge is nonchalant, yet professional; assuredly a more sophisticated crowd is present, which the DJ caters to with a blend of indie and electronica. No obnoxious top 40 music to be found here. Downstairs at the Drake Underground, there is always something for music lovers, whether a new indie outfit, experimental DJ, the weekly Comedy special, or Toronto’s monthly Poetry Slam. The venue has been home to artists the likes of M.I.A., Grizzly Bear, Metric, Broken Social Scene, and the list goes on and on.

Though considerably smaller than other trendy venues the city has to offer, The Drake Underground is quaint and inviting, offering a warm environment that’s irresistible not to love. The stage can be viewed from anywhere, even if your sitting at the fully stocked bar (which offers a copious selection of bourbon and fine wine), and the acoustics are dead-on. Since its capacity is limited, it usually accommodates younger, more obscure artists that make their way through Toronto’s vivacious indie scene. If you arrive early enough, there are leather couches available, though you won’t find anyone sitting during a set. On the odd night when there isn’t a band playing, the Drake Underground is a prominent neighborhood hangout, a bar that generates good music, good friends, and good times. Highly recommended for any tourist passing through the city that is interested in Toronto’s cultural scene, particularly if your a fan of independent music.
