Gleeks Anonymous: “Glee: Episode 2.12: Silly Love Songs”

By Dana Grossman on February 9th, 2011 in Gleeks Anonymous

Glee isn’t a stranger to having episodes based around holidays, carefully placed within the story to air right around the holiday in question. From Christmas to Halloween to last Sunday’s Super Bowl episode, the show doesn’t miss a beat to stay current. The latest holiday they’ve tackled is the one coming up in just a few days from now: Valentine’s Day (or Singles Awareness Day for the less fortunate).

Since Glee wouldn’t be Glee if characters weren’t suddenly falling in love with different people every other week, we begin with Puck deciding that he suddenly has eyes for the newest club member, Lauren. She’s not exactly what we generally thought Puck’s type would be, and to kick a dead horse around a little bit, he breaks out into a rendition of Queen‘s “Fat Bottomed Girls”. The…intention is nice, we suppose, but. Uh. A little tactless, much? Regardless, it wasn’t such a bad performance, though you can’t exactly compete with the original.

Michael Jackson’s music returned this week with “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)”, sung by Artie and Mike to their respective girlfriends. While again, not a bad performance–Mike’s dancing is always a sight in itself to behold–the number felt incredibly shoehorned in. “Oh, hey, we have five minutes to fill. Either we have more people randomly macking on each other or we throw in a number even more random than the usual randomness of it all.” I mean, hell, it even had the cheesy old-school Broadway number setup.

Away from McKinley High, Blaine shares his idea to profess his love to the man he is crushing on… … …an assistant manager at the Gap. Oh, come on. Regardless, because this is Glee, his idea is to perform Robin Thicke‘s “When I Get You Alone” in the middle of the store with the Warblers as backup. In a nod to, well, the real world, it ultimately blows up in his face when his crush is fired and subsequently rejects him. Blaine, honey. You have a lovely voice. You rocked the song. The other members were great, too. The choreography was cute, and the shoppers seemed pretty entertained. But…c’mon. Really.

At this point in the episode, we go hardcore into the love pentagon…hexagon…whatever the hell it is at this point. Rachel likes Finn, Finn likes Quinn (or does he like Rachel too?), Quinn likes Finn and Sam, blah blah blah insert soap opera-y stuff here. Katy Perry is apparently to season 2 of the show as Journey was to season 1, so to fit the quota, Rachel proceeds to sing “Firework”. Although I’m getting more sick of Katy Perry than I ever had before, objectively, Rachel did a great job as she usually does.

We wrap up with the Warblers performing “Silly Love Songs” by Paul McCartney and his band Wings. It was a cute little number to end with, but not a real standout. It was a way to bring it to a smooth ending, at least. Well. However a smooth ending you can have with love decagon or whatever is going on.

Overall, a decent episode, but the closest thing to a standout number was “When I Get You Alone”; even then, it was more due to the sheer absurdity but cuteness of a random performance at the Gap. The whole thing feels like a let-down after Sunday’s amazing episode, but I wasn’t expecting them to be able to top it, either. Now, if they’d just stop playing coy with Blaine and Kurt for one damn moment… Maybe next episode? What’s the next episode… …oh dear god tell me I did NOT just hear Justin Bieber. Oh god.
