Pearl Jam fans must be salivating in anticipation of summer: there’s that mysterious, locationless festival, the Cameron Crowe-directed documentary, and everything frontman Eddie Vedder has planned for himself, namely, his forthcoming solo album fittingly entitled Ukulele Songs, and a subsequent solo tour. The album is due out May 31st, and the cover art above has just been revealed.

The image, courtesy of Antiquiet (via TwoFeetThick), comes from artist Jason deCaires Taylor, famed for his underwater sculptures. This one is called “The Lost Correspondent”, and sits 8 meters (just about 26.5 feet) down in the ocean near the West Indian island of Grenada.

As described on the artist’s website, the work “depicts a man sitting at a desk with a typewriter. The desk is covered with a collection of newspaper articles and cuttings that date back to the 1970s. Many of these have political significance, a number detail Grenada’s alignment with Cuba in the period immediately prior to the revolution. The work informs the rapid changes in communication between generations. Taking the form of a traditional correspondent, the lone figure becomes little more than a relic, a fossil in a lost word.”

Assumptions can be made regarding Vedder’s choice of the image, as he’s never been one to choose artwork indiscriminately. Perhaps he feels the ukulele has become as antiquated as solitary journalists and, much like Twitter has done for newsmakers, seeks to bring attention to the instrument. Or, ya know, perhaps something else entirely.

The complete track listing for Ukulele Songs and Vedder’s upcoming solo tour dates can be seen below. You can check out the lead single, “Longing to Belong”, here, and Antiquiet  has some live previews of other tracks recorded during Vedder’s recent Australian trek.

Antiquiet credited the above post to this site originally, and that was the original origin. As the post author, I thank you in advance for updating the source of this post.. http://www.twofeetthick.com/2011/04/listen-to-ukulele-song-samples-about-that-album-cover/
