When one thinks of AIDS research, very rarely does the topic of Brazilian Tropicália music from the 1960s emerge. But the AIDS charity Red Hot put the two together back in 1996 for an album to benefit AIDS research and prevention and they’re doing it again with the sequel, Red Hot + Rio 2, which hits stores June 28th.

The original compilation released back in 1996 featured tracks from Maxwell, PM Dawn, David Byrne, Everything but the Girl, and Stereolab, plus Brazilian artists Gilberto Gil, Astrud Gilberto, and more. The sequel features collaborations from Cults and Superhuman Happiness, Beck and Seu Jorge, of Montreal and Os Mutantes, and David Byrne and Caetano Veloso, along with solo tracks by John Legend and many others. Other artists, including St. Vincent, Neon Indian, and Dirty Projectors were unable to finish their tracks in time, but Red Hot hopes to release those as digital singles in the future.
