Appropriately entitled Cover + Remix, the June 28th release is just that — a cover and a remix from modern stars of the game. The cover comes in the form of “Cool” as done by Deerhunter. The track was Pylon’s debut single off their 1980 Gyrate LP, and Deerhunter’s version looks to remain fairly faithful, save for a “newly extended instrumental interlude: an almost grooving section that keeps the guitars going as pleasant noises swell and circle underneath before overtaking the sound.”
The remix in the single’s title refers to The New Yorker music critic/musician Sasha Frere-Jones aka Calvinist’s reworking of “Yo-Yo.” A “decidedly less frenetic [take] than the Pylon original,” the track also features the voice of Alexis Krauss of Sleigh Bells. Two separate versions will appear on the release, one labeled “The Calvinist Saved Mix” and the other “The Calvinist Unsaved Mix,” with the working assumption being that Krauss appears on both.
You can jump back in time to preview the forthcoming single below by watching Deerhunter perform “Cool” at NYC concert in early 2008. Tip of the hat to Exclaim.ca for the story.
