With a time slot far less favorable than other late night funny men, it takes a special musical guest on Kimmel, or a serious case of insomnia, to keep (East coast) viewers dialed in during the early morning hours. For hip-hop fans, Wednesday’s late night appearance by Rick Ross and his Maybach Music Group was definitely worthy of pounding a few extra energy drinks. The MMG collective continued their promo run for their debut collaborative LP, Self Made Vol. 1, with a talent-laden performance of both “Play Your Part” and “Tupac Back”.
With the help of Travis Barker on drums, James Earl on bass, and the smooth vocals of D.A. from Chester French, Ross, Wale, and Pill electrified the live audience with their lovelorn verses for “Play Your Part”. For “Tupac Back” D.A. left the stage to make room for the collective’s Meek Mill. Even with four heavy-hitters on stage, the rappers never broke one another’s flow, resulting in a powerful, raw performance. Meek Mill’s twisted, often violent, verses got both the West Coast audience and Ross jumping around, and there are few thinks scarier than the massive Ross jumping at you bare-chested. Check out the clip above.
