After years of success as one half of Outkast, Big Boi dropped his debut album last July and almost immediately gained a measure of that success as a solo entity. In the intervening year, Big Boi has received heaps of critical praise, played countless festivals, and made late-night television appearances, in addition to landing some pretty primo work as a producer, which has brought enough money to create a record label for his daughter. Now, as perhaps the ultimate sign of notoriety, Big Boi has teamed up with Crown Royal Black to create the mini-film, The Crown Life (via Prefix).
The short follows the MC around for a few days, beginning with his performance at the 2011 Grammys and into some time spent in his studio, Stankonia, with friend/collaborator Killer Mike. The studio segment is worthy of an extra iota or two of attention as Big Boi and Killer Mike discuss their upcoming project and more of the former’s future solo efforts. Of course, no night is complete without a guided tour of some of Atlanta’s finest after-hours destinations. Watching this is like being a famous rapper yourself — without all the talent or charisma, of course.
