Watch: MGMT and The Flaming Lips perform “Kids”

on May 02, 2011, 4:26pm

With Festival Season upon us, and musicians’ locational luck working to our benefit, these fan-filmed videos of live collaborations will no doubt increase in the coming months. Watching them here stirs up a variety of feelings, but mostly a) “Boy, why the hell wasn’t I there?” and b) “Boy am I glad that guy with the camera, whom I would normally curse and roll my eyes at, was there.” So many confusing emotions watching these — like a Judd Apatow movie. How am I supposed to feel, Judd?!

Anyhow, The latest addition to the pile comes from Memphis’ annual Beale Street Music Festival held last weekend. Wayne Coyne and The Flaming Lips teamed up with MGMT‘s Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden for their anthemic “Kids” (via Psych Explorations of the Future Heart). Check out the clip above. Of note: Yes those are Wizard of Oz Dorothy’s and yes that is VanWyngarden playing the flugelhorn. Where were you?

See footage closer to the stage, complete with Wayne’s intro – plus Andrew playing Wayne’s guitar backstage – at and subscribe at for more videos.

Also, it’s PSYCH Explorations of the Future Heart – not PSYCHIC. And Andrew did not play flugelhorn (as I explained here

Because you asked, I was about 5 rows in front of the person that filmed this.
