Lorin Ashton doesn’t like to be held to too many labels when it comes to his music. For the past decade, over the course of seven LPs and 5 EPs, the 33-year-old Santa Cruz, CA.-native better known as Bassnectar has melded his sound into a potent mixture that combines all the best aspects of electronic music subgenres like house, trance, ambient, breakbeat, all while maintaining a deep commitment to eardrum-bursting low end.

The latest project to emerge from the depths of Bassnectar Labs, Divergent Spectrum, can’t be officially added to record collections and hard drives until August 2nd (via Amorphous Music), but Ashton has released the first taste from the effort. “Upside Down” opens with a very hip-hop vibe before sirens segue the track into a pulsating dubstep sample that’s got D&B flourishes to boot. Ashton promises that each track on Divergent will be “different…[representing] a different shade on the sonic spectrum.”
