It’s funny how the strangest things happen at the most inopportune time. Take the case of Ms. Lauryn Hill for example. Since last June the world has seen “new” tracks surface, a few one-off dates get mixed reviews, and a full fledged club tour get booked. And while the 36-year-old’s stage show wasn’t as polished as the masses wanted it to be, Hill kept pressing on. She showcased her flaws at early gigs, but kept booking more in the hopes of getting back in the groove. She played to tens of thousands at Coachella in April and most recently paid tribute to her baby-D’s father on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Hill looked to be very close to being back in her prime during that May appearance as a part of Bob Marley week on Fallon, but on June 4th, L-Boogs announced that she was going to be taking some time off to give birth to her sixth child. A due date hasn’t been announced, but last night found Hill returning to Fallon to play one more set before settling into the gestation period. Her performance of “Doo Wop (That Thing)” from The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (her only solo LP, which she’s slated to perform in its entirety at this year’s Rock The Bells dates) opened with baby no. 6 enjoying some bouncy time and found Hill’s band finally performing well enough for their fearless leader to stop telling them to speed up the tempo.

The flow and delivery sounded great, and fans who are worried that their heroine may go into another deep hibernation can rest assured that she’ll be back. In a note on her official website, Hill hinted that her return would come sooner than later. “The majority of these dates were planned in advance of me knowing about the continued growth of my family,” she wrote. “I can’t wait to re-engage with you, and give you a musical experience worth coming back for.  Let’s do it real soon.”

If you’re not lucky enough to engage with L-Boogie at one of the Rock The Bells dates listed below, then just settle for the video (via Mr. World Premiere) of last night’s performance below. Tickets to the festival can be had here.
