Though Amy Winehouse released just two albums, the soulful singer left an indelible mark on pop music that impacts artists large and small. Now, in the wake of her death, two of those artists, M.I.A. and Big Boi, have released tributes to the “Rehab” singer.
M.I.A.’s ode, “27″, was recorded back in December as a more general meditation on the self-destructive tendencies of rock stars and, given its proximity to Winehouse’s passing, a final, haunting goodbye from one friend to another.
Big Boi’s offering is a remix of “Tears Dry On Their Own” from Winehouse’s sophomore smash Back To Black. Put together by Organized Noize and the Dungeon Family, the production, along with Big Boi’s verse, adds a kind of disjointed, ethereal edge to an already heart-spilling cut.
