nirvana nevermind reissue Update: Nirvanas Nevermind reissues detailed

As previously reported, Universal Music plans to mark the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s iconic sophomore album Nevermind with a multi-format reissue on September 27th. Now, we have more details on what exactly each package will include.

In addition to a standard digitial/CD remaster of the original album, there will also be a 2-CD Deluxe Edition featuring the album and its b-sides, as well as the first full official release of the pre-Nevermind demos recorded at producer Butch Vig’s  Smart Studios and the boombox recordings of subsequent rehearsals “through which the listener can actually experience ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, ‘Come As You Are’, ‘On A Plain’, and others take shape before his or her very ears.”

Also available will be a limited-numbered Super Deluxe Edition. In addition to the material included in the Deluxe Edition, this package will also offer the ‘Devonshire Mixes,’ aka the album as produced and mixed by Vig as opposed to the commercially released final version produced by Vig and mixed by Andy Wallace. Rounding out the Super Deluxe will be live recordings of the band’s Halloween 1991 concert at Seattle’s Paramount Theatre on CD and DVD (the latter which also features all four music videos from Nevermind), as well as a 90-page bound book full of rarely and never before seen photos, documents and various other visual artifacts of the Nevermind era.

Both the Deluxe Edition and Super Deluxe Edition will also be available for digitial download. For the wax heads, the reissue will be released as a 180-gram heavyweight vinyl edition featuring the same 40 tracks as the Deluxe Edition. And the aforementioned Paramount concert, which is said to be the only known Nirvana concert shot to film, will be available in a 1080p high definition picture and uncompressed 5.1 surround sound and stereo in stand-alone Blu-ray, along with DVD and digital long form video formats.

So there’s a lot to consider.

How is it the only Nirvana concert shot to film? Do Reading and Unplugged, or that In Utero show they always used to show on MTV not count?

I re-read the press release. It reads like this: “The Paramount concert, transferred from 16mm film and multi-track audio,
is the only known Nirvana concert shot to film and will be available in
a 1080p high definition picture and uncompressed 5.1 surround sound and
stereo in stand-alone Blu-ray, along with DVD and digital long form
video formats.”

It’s in the subtle definition of “film”.  16mm is film, whereas Reading, Unplugged, and the In Utero show were all probably shot to “tape” (ie, something like Betamax).
