Video: The Get Up Kids cover Blur’s “Girls and Boys”

For the past two summers, The Onion’s A.V. Club has been doing some amazing stuff with their A.V. Undercover series. By having buzzing indie artists come into their offices and choose a song to cover from an ever-shrinking list, the Club has managed to capture on film such glories as Titus Andronicus putting their touch on They Might Be Giants’ “Birdhouse In Your Soul” followed a few weeks later by TMBG and the A.V. Club staff performing the best damn rendition ever of Chumbawama’s only smash hit, “Tubthumping”. The newest entry in the second series sees reunited emo forebears The Get Up Kids taking a swing at one of Blur’s earliest successes, “Girls and Boys”.

Even if they hadn’t had only eight songs to choose from, the Kansas City rockers would still likely have chosen the Blur track, as it’s something they’d been tooling around with during sound-checks anyway. Rather serendipitous, isn’t it? Guitarist Matthew Pryor and bassist Rob Pope come off as practiced as both do tremendous service to the familiar riffs they’re given. While the vocals aren’t always spot on, it still waxes nostalgic hearing a band from the 90’s covering lyrics that include “Love in the 90’s is paranoid on sandy beaches.” Check out the video for yourself above, and see more covers at the A.V. Club website. Meanwhile, I’m going to keep waiting to see who covers “The Power Of Love”.
