And while Umphrey’s McGee is known for tickling the Phish sensory parts of our brains one minute, only to hurl us into a full-blown rock ‘n roll sonic experience the next, “Miami Virtue” seems a little subdued by comparison. It still has all the usual stylistic flares from the band: the dense melodies, the laid-back yet expert craftsmanship, and the always-tight rhythm section. But it lacks that visceral punch we’ve come to expect from a group that makes a point of blowing minds every time they take the stage.
Of course, Umphrey’s is, and always will be, a band that lives more for the stage than the studio. So with that segue, you should check out the band’s expanded 2011/2012 tour dates below for a chance to hear “Miami Virtue” live.
