Update: Head over to Pitchfork to stream both songs from the 7″.
Wilco seems to be doing pretty well, what with a new album on the way, a label to run, and a festival the rockers organize each June. Even with everything going so great, frontman Jeff Tweedy can’t help but continue to explore his musical options. While he’s previously worked with Mavis Staples, Tweedy has now turned his sights on collaborations with Deerhoof and a band with his own sons (via Pitchfork). What. A. Guy.
Tweedy is the latest artist to work with Deerhoof on the latter’s collaborative 7″ series (other collaborations include releases with Xiu Xiu and Kasai Allstars). The Deerhoof-Tweedy effort, Behold a Raccoon in the Darkness, features the A-side of Tweedy singing over the instrumental for “Behold a Marvel in the Darkness”, off this year’s Deerhoof Vs. Evil. The B-side, though, proves to be far more interesting: “Own It”, as the track’s called, is the first release from the Racoonists, Tweedy’s brand new band with sons Sam and Spencer. The track, with accompanying music video available below for viewing, was recorded in the boys’ shared bedroom (near the matching race car beds we’re certain) and is a rather odd, almost unnerving number. Even still, it should undoubtedly make tons of folks jealous of the family Tweedy.
Behold a Raccoon in the Darkness, with cover art above, will be limited to 2,000 clear pink vinyl copies (pre-order your copy here). Otherwise, it’s available through Polyvinyl on October 11th.
