While The National didn’t seem like the best band to soundtrack a video game, “Exile Vilify”, their contribution to Portal 2, really was a perfect choice for the first-person puzzle-platformer. Because of the game’s massive popularity, Valve Software, the game’s developers, decided to hold a contest to find the best fan-made music video for the track. And when Valve couldn’t pick a winner, they turned to the band to help find the clear choice amongst the 320 entries. The following two videos are the first and 1.00000000001th place winners. The winning clip, filmed, directed, and edited by C.F. Meister, involves the saddest sock puppets ever. The runner-up, directed and produced by YouTube user MikeMov89Portal2, is not nearly as depressing (but will still make some people weep).
Check out both videos below. Then, head here to watch some of the high and lowlights of the contest, including the second place winner who was actually the third place winner. Ouch, so close to glory.
