Giveaway: Deftones: The Vinyl Collection, 1995-2011

By Andrew Rubin on November 29th, 2011 in Giveaways

It’s time to dust off the old record player, put back that copy of Barry Manilow II that you obviously only listen to because your mom left it there, and beef up that vinyl collection of yours. Just like that time we grudgingly bailed you out of jail, Consequence of Sound, as always, has got you covered. This time, however, we are armed with just the right amount of hard-rock goodness. Specifically, eight LPs of hard-rock goodness from Sacramento-based, alternative hard-rock outfit, Deftones.

We are giving away a copy of the band’s new limited-edition, career-spanning box set, Deftones: The Vinyl Collection, 1995-2011, to one lucky reader. And, get this: according to the band’s team, this is the only remaining copy of 1,000 box sets created that’s still up for grabs (the rest are sold out!)

The massive set contains the band’s first seven albums (from 1995′s Adrenaline to 2010′s Diamond Eyes) as well as their Record Store Days LP Covers, all re-cut and pressed on 180-gram vinyl. And since no box set would be complete without it, the collection also includes a unique lithograph and cover art.

So, let’s get this started: How do the Deftones make you feel? Do you want to scream from the rooftops? Maybe some hushed singing from halfway up the stairwell, instead? Well, follow both @coslive and @deftonesband on Twitter and send us a tweet explaining how the band have impacted your life. Anything from your favorite memory containing their best song to the most badass day ever that happened after you bought your first album of theirs can be included. Just remember, keep it creative and your escapades legal (we can’t afford to bail you out again with the holidays coming up).

We’ll pick a winner on December 12th at 12:00pm ET.

Peep the “Rocket Skates” video below for some inspiration and get working on your entries!

Been a Deftones fan since I 95. I was working at Nobody Beats the Wiz while I was in college and picked up the Around the Fur album the day it was release in 2007. I’ve seen Deftones 18 times since then in NYC and once in Myrtle Beach, S.C.- it was Chi’s birthday! one love for Chi

ive been a big fan of deftones for a couple years now and i love all there albums there first cover album which i havent gotten a chance to hear yet. the two albums that have really help me  in situations in life were adrenaline and around the fur. when i was in middle school i was so angry and i heard adrenaline and it showed me that anger of it all and i decided i had to change for the better. n aroud the fur is just all round relatable we have all been in a bad relationship and the songs especially rickets really capture the emotion behind it. be quite and drive was probably the most chilling song on that album because its so nicely placed between rickets and lotion and the three song toghether bring out the best in echother. All time favorite would have to be saturday night wrist its a beutifull album and personally one of the most creative(the deftones album is a close second) i love a band that can make such and heavy album then make one like that. rats rats rats was the best for me it blended the chaoticness of deftones with there melodic side amazingly, beware the water does a pretty good job too. there one of my favorite bands and good luck chi hope u get better. ( im probably not gonna win i just wanted to thank these guys for there hard work)

@coslive:twitter @deftonesband:twitter  Lets see, I’ve been listening to this band for over a decade now. First song I ever heard was “Be Quiet and Drive” while playing Dave Mirras Freestyle BMX on the PS One. I think I probably played that game to death just to keep listening to this song. Around my senior year in highschool was when I discovered White Pony and I’m pretty sure it set the course of my musical tastes from that moment on. That album was the bridge between the awful music I listened to at the moment to greater, more experimental bands who had a different sound to them. My first concert ever was catching them at the Metro when they were touring the self titled album, and I had no idea what a rock concert was like, let alone a Deftones show. Being up front and having Chino jump on top of me during “My Own Summer” set the bar pretty high for what a high energy concert is like. Much disappointment ensued as I attended more shows and came to realize that not many other bands have this much energy live, so I was met with many a bad show, thankfully they come here pretty often and I haven’t missed a show since that special evening at the Metro. They also are one of the few bands whose music takes me back to a specific point in time in my life, and that is a great feeling, so yeah, a vinyl collection would be pretty special to me.

I remember the first time I heard Deftones back in 1995 at my Dads music store “The Music Station” in Roseburg Oregon. That made me only 11 at the time. There was a promo of Adrenaline behind the counter, so I threw it on over the store speakers. I remember playing Nosebleed when my Dad walked in and said “what is this devil music?” haha, i’ll never forget that ridiculous comment. He didn’t like me listening to “violent” music, which brings me to my next encounter with that album. The only trouble with the law i had was stealing Adrenaline from Fred Meyers; I was too young to buy with the parental advisory sticker so I lifted it. and got caught on camera. To date this is the only band that I listened to in 95 and and still listen to regularly; most bands come and go, the Deftones were built to last and have been taking their fans on a journey of progression. Their music has been a soundtrack to my life experiences…good and bad.

I have been a fan for about ten years, The Deftones are my secret Cycling training weapon, I crank up the IPOD and 3 hours of hard training become a blur of music infused adrenaline rush

My best memory of the Deftones was back in 2010. I had been listening to them since Saturday Night Wrist was released and I had finally gotten to go to a show in Columbus, Ohio. This was the first concert I had ever been to and I was very excited and almost nervous at getting to see my Idol, Chino, in real life. I listen to them everyday and I’ve really been wanting to get their albums on vinyl. I have every album on my I-pod. The Deftones gave a spectacular performance at the Newport Music Hall and it would give me a lot of joy to hear those songs from my old record player.

I can still remember the first time I heard of and listened to Deftones. It was summer 1996 & I was on a weekend trip with other young teenagers from the YMCA and one kid had a white CD that had Bored, Lifter & 7 Words on it. I jammed on that disc the whole weekend trip! Later I bought Adrenaline and eagerly awaited the 2nd album.
One time they were playing a show in downtown Dallas, but it was a 17+ show and I was bummed cause I wasn’t old enough.
Fast-forward to late October 1997 – My mom drove me up to the CD store (not a big chain-store, just a small indie store) and I bought Deftones’ 2nd album. I remember it felt so scaled-up and bigger overall from Adrenaline. I was SO excited about it I listened to it in the car with my mom all the way home and then went straight up to my room to hear the rest. From then on I was a full fledged Deftones fan. I soon learned all the songs on guitar. Stephen Carpenter is one of my guitar idols. I just switched out my two 6-strings and 7-string to ESP brand. I’ve only seen them live once last year in downtown Dallas, I was plently old by then LOL!

My high school sweetheart (early 2000′s) was obsessed with Deftones.
The music never quit playing, and I never fully understood why and how
one band could impact and influence his life in the way it did.  It
wasn’t until I heard ‘Boys Republic’ that I came to understand and
appreciate the magnitude and the influence that my boyfriend
experienced.  It was as if a literal light had shined upon my life too.
My high school sweetheart and I, 10 years later-  have continued to
hold  Deftones close- as a key in our life that we continue to share.
Every year we have given the gift of Deftones- through donations for
Chi, albums, concerts, and right now… The Vinyl Collection is one
thing we have been trying so hard toget our hands on. A constant reminder of the many amazing times and years shared.

I dont need to win the record and do not want to open a twitter account for that reason. But I feel compelled to share my thoughts on the subject. When I started listening to music the deftones had a style that was so raw, chaotic and energetic that it was just a symbol of my teenagehood. Later when I started listening more to lyrics there were a few gems inbetween and what I particularly like is that not all of the songs are dead obvious so you can interpret them differently thus relevant to you.

@coslive:twitter @deftonesband:twitter  Since 2001, when I witnessed the first and only performance of Deftones w/ Maynard James Keenan performing ‘Passenger’ in Vancouver, I’ve become engulfed in everything and anything Deftones. From meeting the band at this year’s Big Day Out (see photo attached) shaking Chi Cheng’s hand from the front row at Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, seeing them perform Adrenaline and Around the Fur in their entirety at the same show, and seeing the band live six times, Deftones will always be my favorite band.
Travelling the world with my fiancee to see as many Deftones shows as possible, they’re the band that initially brought us together as a couple! Throughout our entire 5 year relationship we continually associate our experiences as a couple with Deftones shows and the travel we take on to see them live.

I hope for Cos’ sake that most of your staff have witnessed a Tones show. The pure power and adrenaline displayed by the entire band is unmatched in the music industry. Abe Cunningham is the most entertaining live drummer next to John Bonham. Spend an entire show watching him smash his kit and your life will change. Chino’s stage presence, vocal range and showmanship will never grow old, no matter how many shows you attend. Sadly, Chi Cheng will never be replaced and I pray that I may see him live again. Eventhough Diamond Eyes is my favorite album since Around the Fur, the Deftones I remember will always be with Cheng on Chino’s left.I was so bummed to miss out on this extraordinary vinyl collection, but will do anything to get my hands on this last copy. You will NOT find a bigger Deftones fan than me, they are my life! I’ve donated hours, days, weeks, months, and years of my life to listening to Deftones and this collection will be used and/or represented well if thrown my way. Please just consider my devotion to Deftones and believe these words – Deftones are my life!

How exactly do I do this. The method I’m attempting isn’t allowing for all the words I need to communicate to be typed, or is the purpose of a “tweet” to be short and sweet?

  • http://twitter.com/JPBauguess Janet P Bauguess

I am, Janet, an almost 40yr old mom trying to learn to tweet and comment because of my love for my 16yr old daughter, Julila. She was born in 1995.. the beginning of this Deftones The Vinyl Collection. As she became old enough to like her own music the Deftones have been her number one pick. Her first concert was the Deftones ( which I took her to and it was my first rock concert too. ) We attended the concert in Fayetteville, NC. The Deftones play a very important lifetime memory for the two of us.. and of course the Vinyl collection would make her Christmas. This is my second attempt at this.. hope I got it right this time.
