The news was first revealed last week in a series of tweets by Koehler which seemed to indicate that the decision was not hers to make. “Cat’s outta the bag, I’m not in Best Coast anymore,” Koehler wrote. When asked why, she replied “your guess is as good as mine” and added it was “not my choice.”
Over the weekend, Best Coast frontwoman Bethany Cosentino confirmed Koehler’s departure, but added “there have been some misunderstandings” and that Koehler was never a permanent member of the band.
Cosentino wrote on the band’s Facebook:
Best Coast has and always will be Bobb [Bruno] and I. No matter who has joined the band on tour, whatever lineup ensues, the band is simply the two of us. That said, these past two years have been full of nothing but the greatest of memorable adventures and I am so grateful that my friend Ali was a part of them when we were on tour.
Cosentino later added that Koehler was “informed 2 months ago that our live lineup was changing. There is no bad blood between any of us.”
A former member of Vivian Girls, Koehler joined Best Coast in 2010 and has toured extensively with the band since then. She plans to continue a career in music and recently posted a number of solo songs on her Bandcamp.
As for the future of Best Coast, Cosentino and Bruno are currently working with producer Jon Brion on their sophomore LP. Stay tuned for updates on that.
