There’s another unexpected collaboration in the works, this time between Phish frontman Trey Anastasio and members of The National and Mates of States, as SPIN.com reports. They’ve all come together to record Anastasio’s next studio album, with Peter Katis serving as producer. The connection? Katis produced The National’s Boxer and Mates of State’s Rearrange Us, along with Vermont rock band The Pants’ Eat Crow, which Anastasio championed upon its 1997 release.
According to SPIN, the acts are recording at Bridgeport, Connecticut’s Tarquin Studios, with the sound described as a “mix between Anastasio’s eclectic, Afro-tinged rock and the kind of experimental indie pop produced by the Philistines Jr., Katis’ own recently reformed band.” Recording is expected to wrap up in late December.
As previously reported, Anastasio will embark on his first-ever orchestral tour next February, which will feature orchestrations of classic Phish songs and solo Anastasio compositions. You can find the trek’s itinerary below.
It’s also worth mentioning that this isn’t the only jam-band related project in the works for The National: bassist Scott Devendorf is “shadow-curating” a Grateful Dead cover albums for charity.
