Video: Rufus Wainwright performs “Minuit Chrétiens” on Fallon
Last night, Jimmy Fallon handed out his Christmas present early. (Or, maybe he was just celebrating the first night of Hannukah – you pick.) The gift? One affecting seasonal performance by Rufus Wainwright alongside The Roots. Never one to phone something in, Wainwright offered a twist on the oft sung “O Holy Night”, instead scaling back a few hundred years to French poet Placide Cappeau’s original work, “Minuit, chrétiens”.
Sung entirely in French, the American-Canadian songwriter orchestrated something unique, allowing us to forget the countless times we’ve heard its English counterpart in shopping malls everywhere. If this tickles your fancy, stay tuned for Wainwright’s forthcoming Mark Ronson-produced LP, Out of the Game, due for release this Spring. In the meantime, turn up the volume and crank this soon-to-be holiday favorite below (especially if you’re baking cookies or slummin’ in the PJs) courtesy of The Audio Perv.
