The Mountain Goats’ head honcho John Darnielle has a history of arbitrarily dropping musical treats. Like that time he took to Twitter to give away “Thucydides II-58“, or the random radio in-studio session from 1999 where he covered Radiohead’s “No Surprises”. With Christmas in a few days, Darnielle visited the offices of The A.V. Club to deliver a cover of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” for their Holiday Undercover series. With an extreme close-up, trusty acoustic guitar in hand, and just a little post-production snowfall, Darnielle delivered a charming rendition of the holiday classic, polished with the perfect amount of his own kookiness.
